Role overview
This position supports a specialized U.S. Navy program on Diego Garcia and focuses on the safe, compliant control of hazardous materials, hazardous waste, other regulated waste, and medical waste. The role sits within a global engineering and technical services organization that supports government, allied, and critical infrastructure operations.
What you will do
- Manage the end-to-end collection, packing, movement, and dispatch of hazardous materials, hazardous waste, excess hazardous material, and related regulated waste in line with applicable standards and the approved waste management plan.
- Help run and coordinate operations at the Hazardous Waste Storage Area, Satellite Hazardous Waste Accumulation Points, and the Hazardous Material Minimization Reissue Center.
- Complete required initial training and yearly refresher training for hazardous waste management under the applicable governing standards and federal regulations.
- Handle hazardous materials and waste correctly, either through at least one year of relevant experience or by completing the required handling course.
- Provide the documents, certifications, and qualifications needed to show compliance with contractual and regulatory obligations.
- Make sure hazardous cargo shipments are certified correctly and keep the required shipping qualifications current through refresher training every two years.
- Inspect hazardous materials and waste to confirm that storage, packaging, handling, and disposal meet safety and compliance requirements.
- Move hazardous waste only when properly qualified and trained for transport-related regulatory requirements.
- Keep complete and accurate records covering waste generation, shipment, tracking, and final disposal.
- Support the training of team members and guide others on proper hazardous material and waste handling and disposal practices.
Minimum qualifications
- Five years or more of hands-on experience in collecting, transporting, shipping, and disposing of hazardous waste, hazardous materials, and other regulated waste.
- Five years or more of documented experience working in hazardous material or hazardous waste facilities such as HWSA, SHWAPs, or the HAZMIN Reissue Center.
- Ability to certify outgoing hazardous cargo shipments through approved training from the Naval School of Physical Distribution Management, Oakland, California, or the School of Military Packaging Technology, Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland.
- Maintaining this certification requires refresher training every two years.
- Training aligned with 40 CFR 265.16 for personnel who transport hazardous waste.
- A high school diploma or an equivalent qualification.
- Completion of the HAZMAT/HAZWASTE Handling course, or at least one year of experience working with hazardous materials or waste.
- A valid passport and the ability to travel internationally.
- Passport validity of at least one year at the time of hiring.
- Ability to pass the required medical standards for the contract and continue meeting them throughout deployment.
Preferred background
- Experience working in an austere overseas environment outside the continental United States with a multinational workforce.
- A valid country driver’s license and passport.
- Strong understanding of Diego Garcia Final Governing Standards and hazardous material and waste management requirements.
- Well-developed organizational, communication, and safety compliance abilities.
