Job description

About Flutterwave

Flutterwave is built around a simple mission: enabling Africans to take part in and benefit from the global economy. To support that mission, the company has developed a reliable payment infrastructure that helps individuals and businesses across Africa and internationally send and receive money across borders with ease.

The Opportunity

This role sits at the center of Flutterwave’s move toward profitability. The Group Treasurer will act as the main architect behind the company’s treasury infrastructure, focusing on systems, automation, liquidity visibility, and FX margin protection. Rather than only managing front-office activity, this position is responsible for building the engine behind it — including treasury systems, netting architecture, automated FX reporting, and real-time exposure tracking.

The successful candidate will help shape a global treasury operation that is more automated, audit-ready, and data-driven. The role also involves integrating modern settlement rails such as stablecoins and tokenized deposit structures with traditional bank accounts to improve global liquidity efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

Treasury Systems and Infrastructure

  • Lead the implementation and ongoing optimisation of the global Treasury Management System (TMS), such as Kyriba or an equivalent platform, while connecting as many bank feeds as practical to provide real-time visibility across entities and corridors.
  • Create and maintain automated FX blotters and a daily FX sub-ledger that gives Finance a three-way reconciliation between blotter, bank, and ERP data by 10:00 AM WAT on every business day.
  • Develop a live cash-in-transit dashboard that clearly shows the relationship between assets and liabilities for liquidity planning.
  • Move treasury operations away from manual spreadsheet processes into a fully automated, audit-ready setup that lowers errors, shortens close cycles, and improves decision-making data quality.

Netting, Internalisation, and Margin Improvement

  • Design and run a global netting engine that matches internal FX flows across currencies such as NGN, KES, EGP, USD, GBP, and others, reducing dependence on external liquidity providers and improving netting gains.
  • Increase internalisation to more than 80% across the top 10 currency pairs as an initial benchmark, with an ambitious target above 90%, while cutting external spread costs and improving group margin.
  • Review and remove margin leakage caused by partner charges and corridor subsidies so that no remittance route runs at an unintended loss or weak margin.
  • Build an inventory-skew pricing model that adjusts FX pricing based on live inventory positions to capture additional margin from currency imbalance.
  • Improve returns on idle corporate cash balances so that earnings exceed overnight benchmark rates by at least 50 basis points.

Risk Management and Compliance

  • Set up and maintain the group’s global liquidity and settlement policy, including settlement gap limits, prefunding thresholds, and net open position controls across corridors.
  • Keep the group’s net open position inside board-approved risk thresholds on at least 99% of trading days, with automated warnings for possible breaches.
  • Build reliable FX revaluation and mark-to-market processes, aiming for no significant audit adjustments on net open position balances or FX sub-ledger positions.
  • Support the creation and rollout of interest rate risk and counterparty credit risk frameworks with the CFO and Group Risk team.
  • Ensure treasury activities comply with all applicable regulations across the jurisdictions in which Flutterwave operates, including FX reporting and cross-border settlement obligations.

Data Architecture and Reporting

  • Act as the main source of treasury data for Finance and Operations, supplying accurate and timely liquidity forecasts, corridor-level profit and loss information, and net open position reporting.
  • Keep forecast variance between projected liquidity needs and actual cash usage below 15%, with an aspirational target of under 5%.
  • Design and maintain the FX revenue recognition framework so leadership always has a corridor-level view of FX revenue, spread income, and net margin.
  • Develop reporting tools that allow the CFO and executive team to monitor treasury performance through dashboards, exception reports, and scenario-planning models without manual work.

Strategic Leadership and Collaboration

  • Work with the Head of FX Sales and the Bank Treasurer to turn front-office deal flow into pricing guidance that protects target margins.
  • Partner with the Expansion and Product teams on new corridor launches, banking partnerships, and treasury product initiatives.
  • Present treasury performance, risk exposure, system implementation progress, and margin optimisation results to the CFO, Board, and Audit Committee.
  • Build and guide a high-performing treasury team, defining responsibilities, processes, and progression paths as the function grows.

Qualifications and Experience

Required

  • At least 10 years of experience in institutional treasury, fintech treasury architecture, or a closely related area, with proven results in systems design and margin improvement.
  • Hands-on experience implementing or managing a Treasury Management System such as Kyriba, FIS, or a similar platform in a multi-currency, multi-entity setup.
  • Strong technical knowledge of FX accounting, automated blotter development, net open position management, and FX sub-ledger reconciliation.
  • A highly analytical approach, with comfort working from raw transaction data, building financial models, and extracting unit economics from incomplete datasets.
  • Solid understanding of emerging-market FX behaviour, remittance corridor economics, and global payments infrastructure.
  • Experience creating and enforcing treasury policy structures covering liquidity management, settlement controls, and regulatory compliance.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex treasury data clearly to audiences beyond treasury, including the CFO, Board, and Operations leaders.
  • A bachelor’s degree in Finance, Mathematics, Economics, or a related discipline. A master’s degree or certifications such as CFA, FRM, CTP, or ACT are strongly preferred.

Preferred

  • Experience in a fast-growing African fintech or international payments business with substantial FX exposure in emerging markets.
  • Exposure to netting engine design, liquidity provider management, and dynamic FX pricing models.
  • Working knowledge of SQL and data visualisation tools such as Tableau, Power BI, or Looker to complement TMS reporting.
  • Understanding of crypto and DeFi workflow tools as they relate to cross-border treasury operations.

Additional Information

This position is based in Lagos, Lagos State, Nigeria and is a full-time onsite role. The role is focused on building treasury infrastructure, improving liquidity efficiency, strengthening risk controls, and enhancing FX profitability across Flutterwave’s global operations.
