Role overview
Thermo Fisher Scientific is hiring a Group Leader for its Laboratory Services team in Inhalation in Athlone, Ireland. The position is focused on guiding scientific work, supporting operations, and leading people across complex inhalation studies that contribute to client development programmes from early-stage research through regulatory filing. The role calls for strong expertise in inhalation exposure systems, aerosol characterization, dose delivery, and respiratory platforms, with an emphasis on high-quality execution, client collaboration, and scientifically robust results.
Working schedule
This role follows a standard Monday to Friday schedule.
Environment
The work is carried out in a laboratory setting, and may also involve office or clinical-environment activities. The role includes exposure to electrical equipment, and in some cases biological fluids and infectious organisms. Rare exposure may occur to skin and lung irritants, radiation, toxic materials, hazardous waste, and temperature extremes. Personal protective equipment such as eyewear, gloves, and protective garments is required.
Key duties
Responsibilities include carrying out laboratory work according to client protocols, preparing study and project documentation, supporting experimental design, troubleshooting technical issues, reviewing and analysing data for compliance, coordinating laboratory resources, communicating with clients, and helping implement SOPs and operational policies.
Experience and leadership
The position requires substantial prior experience, equivalent to at least 5 years in a relevant setting, plus a minimum of 1 year in a leadership capacity. Equivalent combinations of education, training, and directly related experience may also be considered.
Skills and capabilities
The ideal candidate should be able to manage experienced professionals or subordinate managers, lead sections or a small department, train and mentor junior staff, solve problems independently, and perform root cause analysis for method investigations. Strong technical writing, presentation, communication, project management, time management, analytical method optimisation, and QA metric knowledge are also important.
