Job description
About the role
The University of Waikato is seeking a hands-on Grounds team member to help care for and improve a 65-hectare campus that feels like a park. The role involves maintaining gardens, trees, shrubs, paths, roads, and open spaces so the campus remains welcoming, tidy, and functional for students, staff, and visitors.
This position is based at the Hillcrest Campus and is a full-time appointment of 40 hours per week. Pay will be set according to your experience, knowledge, and skills, with the possibility of an extra allowance depending on qualifications.
Work is carried out by both grounds staff and contractors, with the goal of supporting university activities as well as passive and active recreation across the campus.
Key duties
- Support the upkeep and ongoing development of the university’s 65-hectare grounds.
- Care for a range of garden collections, trees, shrubs, and planted areas.
- Maintain hardscape areas such as walkways and roads.
- Keep the grounds free from litter and presentable at all times.
- Work across different areas of amenity horticulture and grounds maintenance.
- Use and look after grounds equipment as required.
- Carry out garden bed maintenance and related outdoor tasks.
About the team
The Property Services team manages the university’s corporate estates portfolio, which includes campus development, commercial lease management, facilities, security, and support services such as grounds maintenance, portering, and cleaning. The Gardener/Groundsperson will join a small grounds team that also includes a Grounds Supervisor reporting to the Landscape Manager.
Requirements
- Demonstrated experience in amenity horticulture.
- Ability to operate and maintain grounds machinery and equipment.
- Experience maintaining garden beds.
- Physical fitness, good organisation, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
- A full New Zealand driver’s licence.
- A horticultural qualification is desirable, but not mandatory if you bring relevant experience.
Additional information
The university offers a competitive superannuation contribution, discounted gym membership, and insurance benefits. The campus environment is described as attractive and park-like, and the role offers a practical outdoor setting as part of a supportive team.
The University of Waikato values diversity among staff and students and welcomes applicants from all backgrounds who meet the role requirements. Applicants must have the legal right to live and work in New Zealand in line with immigration rules.
Applications must be submitted through the university’s online portal; emailed applications will not be accepted. For a confidential discussion about the role, contact Mark Thompson, Landscape Manager, at mark.thompson@waikato.ac.nz.
