Job description
Overview
Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust is looking for a Band 8a Finance Business Manager to join its Finance Team. This role sits within a lively, supportive NHS environment focused on delivering improved health and care outcomes. The post can be considered for fully qualified accountants as well as part-qualified candidates who are at the final stage of their studies; however, the starting level for Band 8a will depend on full qualification being completed.
The successful candidate will become part of a varied and collaborative management accounting function, supporting business partnering activity across the Trust. The exact service area supported will be matched to the candidate’s skills and background.
Role focus
Reporting to the Finance Business Partner, you will work closely with Care Group Senior Managers to help them stay within their allocated financial envelope. A key part of the role is driving efficiencies and delivering Cost Improvement Programmes (CIPs) so that the Trust can meet its overall financial plan.
Key duties
- Work with the Finance Business Partner to help the Care Group achieve the Trust’s Financial Risk Rating, as set out under NHSI’s Financial Compliance Framework and the targets linked to the Care Group.
- Partner with Care Group senior leaders to identify savings and deliver CIP actions, enabling the group to operate within its agreed financial envelope and support delivery of the Trust financial plan.
- Analyse complex financial information, assess risks, and provide practical advice so that budgets, envelopes, and CIP targets are realistic, achievable, and understood by delegated budget holders.
- Contribute fully to the Finance Department’s operational business support and partnering work, while also providing leadership to the Finance Management Accounting team at Band 7 Senior Management Accountant level and below.
- Support both Trust-wide and Care Group financial objectives, and help communicate and implement national and local policies across the organisation.
About the team and environment
The Management Accounting function is part of the Business Support service provided to frontline, corporate, and independent sector teams. Around 30 colleagues work in the team, operating from an open-plan office near the main Torbay Hospital site in Torquay as well as remotely.
The wider Finance Team values this function highly and works closely with colleagues in Income, Capital, and Financial Services to produce strong management reporting. The local and national pressures affecting the NHS create a fast-moving environment where efficiency improvements and innovation are strongly encouraged and needed.
