Job description

About the role

Te Aho o Te Kura Pounamu (Te Kura) is seeking a committed Teacher Aide (Kaiāwhina mō te akoranga) to support an ākonga (student) with home-based learning in Epsom, Auckland. This part-time position requires 1 hour and 30 minutes per week and offers a chance to contribute meaningfully within a professional learning team by delivering individualised support that helps the student work toward their goals.

The role is flexible and rewarding, with the opportunity to make a real difference in a learner’s educational journey.

What you will do

  • Provide learning support to ākonga in line with their Individual Education Plan (IEP).
  • Work alongside kaiako (teachers) to deliver lessons and adjust learning resources to suit individual needs.
  • Offer one-to-one or small-group assistance to help ākonga achieve their learning objectives.
  • Support the use of online learning platforms and assistive technology where needed.
  • Promote an inclusive, culturally responsive environment that encourages positive participation.
  • Track learner progress, share updates with kaiako, and maintain accurate records.
  • Take part in team meetings, professional development, and learning-related events or activities.

About you

Te Kura is looking for someone who brings enthusiasm, empathy, and the ability to adapt to the needs of diverse learners.

You may be a strong fit if you have experience supporting ākonga as a Teacher Aide or in a similar special education environment, along with solid communication and relationship-building skills. You should be patient, flexible, organised, and comfortable managing multiple tasks. Confidence using a computer and online learning tools is important, as is a genuine commitment to culturally responsive practice.

If you do not meet every requirement but are passionate about helping ākonga learn and succeed, you are still encouraged to apply.

What we offer

Te Kura provides a supportive and flexible workplace where people are encouraged to thrive. The successful candidate will benefit from a competitive hourly rate of $26.59 to $33.23, aligned with the Teacher Aide Pay Equity Settlement under the Teacher Aide Work Matrix. The final rate will depend on the student’s learning needs and the candidate’s mix of experience and skills.

You will also have access to professional development, opportunities to collaborate with the team, and the chance to make a lasting difference in the lives of ākonga.
