Introduction

We invite applications for an Electrical Engineer position with the Christchurch City Council's Professional & Technical Services Unit. This unit provides expert survey, design, environmental planning, and project delivery services ensuring sustainable, innovative, resilient, and cost-effective infrastructure solutions aligned with high professional standards.

Role Overview

As part of the Mechanical and Electrical team within Water and Waste Design, you will provide specialized technical advice, design solutions, and perform technical reviews for Three Waters infrastructure projects such as reservoirs, pump stations, wells, flow meters, and electrical controls for pump stations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide expert internal electrical engineering services including advisory, design development, and assessment of both internal and external designs.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable standards, legal mandates, and whole-of-life asset objectives through detailed technical input and rigorous quality assurance.
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with internal clients, consultants, contractors, and project collaborators to ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and meet scope and quality goals.
  • Manage quality assurance responsibilities, including reviewing and approving technical drawings, tender documentation, and reporting for Three Waters infrastructure construction drawings.
  • Commit to continual professional development to enhance your technical proficiency.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate is an experienced Electrical Engineer with advanced technical knowledge and a solid track record of project delivery in complex environments. You must communicate effectively across both technical and non-technical audiences and cultivate productive partnerships to achieve durable outcomes.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical Engineering (preferably a four-year degree).
  • Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) registration and/or membership with Engineering New Zealand is preferred.
  • A minimum of eight years post-graduate experience in electrical engineering, including five years in a comparable role within a large or intricate organization.
  • Demonstrated experience designing and reviewing electrical systems and contract documents related to Three Waters infrastructure assets such as wells, pumping stations, flow meters, and automation control systems.
  • Strong practical expertise with low-voltage electrical distribution and control systems.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of relevant Electrical Codes of Practice, regulations, standards, and statutory compliance.
  • Proficiency in engineering and design software including AutoCAD, along with general computer literacy and spreadsheet applications.
