Role overview

The Davis Enhanced Education Program (DEEP) Specialist works in an elementary school under the direction of the School Principal and the DEEP Director. The role focuses on organizing and coordinating the Schoolwide Enrichment Model (SEM) and supporting high-ability/gifted students through specialized instruction tailored to their learning needs.

Job details

This classified position is open to all applicants and will stay open until it is filled. The schedule is 2.4 hours per day for 174 days each year. The pay grade is Grade 6 at $19.98 per hour, based on the 2026-27 Support Salary Table. Any promotion in this role results in at least a 5% pay increase.

Key responsibilities

  • Review student test scores and other data, such as RISE and Acadience, to identify the highest-need student group by grade for program placement.
  • Create and prepare curriculum and learning materials for gifted and high-ability students across several grade levels and subject areas.
  • Design challenging and advanced lessons that promote critical thinking and deeper learning, including use of Depth & Complexity Icons and Bloom’s Revised Taxonomy.
  • Ensure learning materials and instruction match DESK standards.
  • Deliver enrichment lessons to identified students in a small-group pull-out setting.
  • Support individual students on independent study and research projects when needed.
  • Manage student behavior in the classroom or program setting.
  • Work with administrators, teachers, and parents to coordinate student support.
  • Prepare and share a quarterly newsletter for district and school leaders, staff, and parents of participating students.
  • Attend the required monthly training meeting.
  • Use district technology and systems such as email, OneDrive, TEAMS, and Canvas.
  • Help administer the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) when needed.
  • Assist with bulletin boards and website maintenance as assigned.

Minimum qualifications

Applicants should have a high school diploma or equivalent. Some college coursework is preferred. Experience working with children is also preferred, and prior exposure to gifted and talented education programs is considered helpful.

Skills and abilities

The role requires strong communication and people skills for working with students, families, and educators. Candidates should be well organized, able to plan effectively, work independently, show initiative, adapt lesson plans to different grade levels and subject areas, and remain flexible as schedules and student needs change. Word processing ability, familiarity with Microsoft Office 365, and the ability to manage inventory and property are also important.
