Where you'll work
Job description
About the organisation
Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū is a major cultural institution in Aotearoa New Zealand, known for its ambitious exhibition programme and acclaimed publications. The gallery is now looking for a curator to join its team.
The role
Reporting to the lead curator, you will research, shape and deliver exhibitions that are fresh, critically thoughtful and connected to current national and international conversations in art and contemporary culture. The work should also resonate strongly with audiences.
You will collaborate within an experienced curatorial team and work with colleagues across the wider organisation to help position Christchurch Art Gallery at the forefront of audience-focused interpretation, curatorial practice and collection development.
About you
You should enjoy working closely with artists and have established connections within the national visual arts sector. A strong interest in exploring new approaches to curating is important, along with the drive to contribute energetic and original ideas.
You will have a relevant tertiary qualification and be able to show specialist knowledge in your area of interest. The role calls for a growing record of strong exhibitions, public speaking, and clear, engaging art writing suitable for publication.
You will need the confidence to discuss art and exhibitions with both enthusiasm and expertise, and you should be comfortable connecting with a broad range of audiences, including Māori, Pacific and youth communities. Strong interpersonal skills and a collaborative mindset are essential.
What the role offers
This is an opportunity to help shape the cultural life of Christchurch while working in a highly productive team environment. You will also have access to development opportunities and a range of staff benefits.
Additional information
This is a full-time permanent role based primarily at 53 Hereford Street, Christchurch. Salary will be negotiated with the successful applicant and will reflect knowledge, skills, experience, and internal pay relativities across similar roles.
The closing date is 6 July 2026. Applications will be assessed as they are received, and interviews may begin before the closing date. The organisation may close the advertisement early if the role is filled sooner.
Christchurch City Council is committed to a diverse, inclusive and authentic workplace. Candidates are encouraged to apply even if their background does not match every point in the job outline. Support or adjustments during recruitment can be requested via jobs@ccc.govt.nz.
