Role Overview

The Crime Scene Specialist supports criminal investigations by documenting, recovering, preserving, and handling physical evidence from crime scenes. The position focuses on maintaining evidence integrity, producing accurate forensic records, and working closely with deputies and detectives to turn scene details into dependable investigative information that can support successful prosecution.

Compensation

Annual pay is listed at $48,838.40 to $65,915.20.

Key Duties

  • Examine and process crime scenes using observation, photography, written documentation, fingerprint development, casting, and any other needed forensic methods.
  • Gather, transport, and secure evidence or property connected to criminal cases while maintaining strict chain-of-custody controls.
  • Provide testimony in court and related proceedings when required.
  • Draft reports that are accurate, easy to follow, and concise.
  • Carry out public relations work when assigned.
  • Serve as an essential emergency worker and be available to work the hours and assignments required by the agency during activations, including deployments within or outside the county.

Skills and Abilities

The role calls for solid knowledge of evidence recovery and preservation, fingerprinting and latent print development, forensic photography, and modern criminal investigation and identification practices. The specialist must be able to give qualifying testimony on fingerprinting, photography, latent print development, and evidence handling. Success in the Forensics Field Training and Evaluation Program is required. Strong communication, reading comprehension, writing, time management, organization, prioritization, interpersonal skills, computer literacy, and the ability to stay calm and respond appropriately during emergencies are important.

Education and Experience

Applicants should have an associate degree or higher from an accredited college or university in Crime Scene Investigations, Forensic Science, or a Physical Science. Candidates with at least two years of related experience in crime scene work or forensics may also qualify. An equivalent mix of education, training, and experience that provides the necessary knowledge and abilities is acceptable.

Supplemental Working Conditions

The job may require climbing stairs, steps, and expandable ladders while carrying equipment; driving motor vehicles safely day or night in line with licensing and traffic laws; and processing scenes or mixing chemicals while wearing a respirator. Work may involve sitting, standing, or walking for up to 8 hours per day. Physical demands can include occasional lifting up to 75 lbs, continual reaching, and frequent crawling, bending, squatting, climbing, twisting, and kneeling. Environmental exposure may include extreme temperatures and weather, strong odors or fumes, toxic substances, smoke, dust, pollen, wet conditions, humidity, animals or wildlife, blood and bodily fluids, pathogenic substances, explosives, and traffic hazards.

Requirements

  • Legal authorization to work in the United States.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • For current CCSO employees, no disciplinary action within the last 12 months and completion of the current position time commitment requirement.
  • Ability to perform the duties without creating a direct threat to the health or safety of others in the workplace.
  • Willingness to follow agency protocols, show professional conduct, and maintain proper dress and grooming standards.
  • Availability for an oral board interview that includes job-related questions and/or scenarios; the passing score is 80% or higher.
  • Understanding that the Sheriff may select candidates from either internal or external sources.
