Job description

About the role

Serco is seeking a Correctional Officer for the Adelaide Remand Centre in Adelaide, South Australia. This is an on-site, full-time role focused on maintaining prisoner safety, facility security, and respectful day-to-day engagement. You will work as part of a multidisciplinary team that supports prisoner intake, assessment, induction, and transition either into the South Australian prison system or back into the community.

What you will do

  • Help maintain a safe and secure facility through active monitoring and adherence to site procedures.
  • Support an environment that respects cultural diversity and treats all people with dignity.
  • Oversee daily prisoner routines and management processes.
  • Take part in intake, transfer, and discharge activities for prisoners.
  • Work alongside health, mental health, and case management professionals as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Handle incidents calmly and professionally while following de-escalation practices.
  • Encourage rehabilitation and community reintegration, including connection with family, cultural supports, community services, and legal assistance.

What Serco offers

  • Structured training and career development support.
  • A workplace culture that is inclusive and supportive.
  • Potential annual earnings of up to AUD 80,000, including overtime and penalties, plus superannuation.
  • Penalty rates including public holidays at AUD 62 to AUD 70 per hour, Sundays at AUD 49 to AUD 56 per hour, and Saturdays at AUD 37 to AUD 42 per hour.
  • Five weeks of annual leave.
  • Paid on-the-job training, including Certificate III.
  • Uniforms, meals, and limited on-site parking.
  • Access to 24/7 medical and mental health support, plus flexible salary packaging.

What we are looking for

You do not need prior experience, as full training is provided from the first day. Serco is looking for someone with strong communication and people skills, the ability to remain composed in high-pressure situations, and a respectful, empathetic approach when working with colleagues and prisoners from varied backgrounds. Physical fitness is important, including the ability to take part in control and restraint training. A valid driver’s licence is required, along with the ability to obtain the necessary clearances.

Important notes

This position involves a high level of trust and accountability, so a full probity assessment, including a Police Check, will be part of the hiring process.
