Role overview
Datacom is seeking an experienced consulting leader to help drive its Wellington public sector work. The company is a major New Zealand-owned technology partner, and this role is intended to strengthen its consulting-led direction by placing a senior leader at the front end of the business.
The position is highly influential and focused on shaping conversations with public sector clients. It sits between complex government challenges and Datacom’s broader delivery capability, with the aim of bringing a consulting-first approach into the way opportunities are identified, framed, and developed.
Key focus areas

- Lead early-stage discovery with senior business leaders and their direct reports to clarify challenges, identify the underlying business need, and shape the direction of a solution.
- Work closely with sales and service line leaders to bring a stronger consulting mindset into client discussions and position Datacom as a strategic partner rather than only a technology supplier.
- Use an established reputation and network within the Wellington public sector to spot issues early and help create opportunities before they become highly competitive.
- Design the structure of engagements, define the outcomes, and support a smooth handover into delivery teams once work is won.

- A respected standing within the New Zealand public sector, with a history of being the go-to person for senior leaders facing difficult problems.
- A growth-oriented mindset, even without a conventional sales target, and the ability to identify opportunity potential and build a compelling business case.
- The confidence to communicate effectively with senior executives on policy outcomes and with CIOs on technical direction.
- Strong capability in ambiguous, early-stage situations, including turning unclear problems into practical, commercially sound consulting engagements.
- At least 12 years of experience in top-tier consulting such as Big 4 firms or comparable senior leadership experience within the New Zealand public sector.
