This role involves commercial driver’s license testing, customer assistance, fee handling, record updates, and public-facing support under general supervision. One vacancy is available.
Pay Details
Monthly compensation ranges from $3,229 to $4,041, which equals an annual salary of $38,748 to $48,492.
Key Duties
The examiner will support CDL and driver license applicants by collecting required information, administering tests, recording results, and helping customers understand licensing steps and requirements. The job also includes cash reconciliation, vehicle safety checks, and maintaining accurate license records.
- Train associate-level staff on CDL examiner duties and answer role-related questions.
- Gather applicant information for CDL, driver license, permit, and related services, then enter it accurately into the system.
- Administer vision, written, road skills, and knowledge tests in line with Tennessee and federal standards, including photography and result entry.
- Explain licensing rules, office procedures, fees, hours, and application steps to the public.
- Count register cash at the start and end of shifts, prepare daily receipts, identify variances, and reconcile office revenue.
- Check vehicle safety items such as lights, brakes, and turn signals, and evaluate driving behavior against traffic laws and road rules.
- Update licensing records, verify applicant details in LIST, and correct discrepancies with the applicant.
- Complete at least 10 hours of CDL knowledge and road testing annually to remain compliant with state and federal requirements.

Candidates should have education equal to high school graduation. The role also requires successful completion of a background clearance process, including fingerprint-based and name-based checks, and compliance with federal disqualifying offense rules. Applicants must not have certain permanent or interim disqualifying offenses, must not have been released from incarceration within the prior 5 years for interim disqualifying offenses, and must not be under a felony warrant. A pre-employment physical is required after an offer is made, and the applicant must hold a valid motor vehicle operator’s license or be able to obtain one before appointment.
Additional Requirements
- Criminal history disclosure is required as part of consideration for the role.
- Driver qualification standards apply to positions with driving responsibilities.
- For the past five years, the driving record must not include DUI, reckless driving, a license suspension for moving violations, or more than four moving violations.
- Driver’s license information should be included in the Licenses and Certifications section of the application.
- Agencies may grant exceptions based on other factors.

Helpful abilities include active listening, critical thinking, instructing others, speaking clearly, deductive reasoning, written comprehension, speech recognition, mathematical reasoning, and quick reaction time.
Tools and Equipment
Work may involve a computerized cashier system, standard office equipment, a digital camera, motor vehicles, and a computer testing system.
Notes
