About the role
Hamilton Zoo sits within the Te Kaaroro Nature Precinct, a 90-hectare setting that also includes Waiwhakareke Natural Heritage Park. The precinct supports conservation, learning, and enjoyable visitor experiences that help people connect with nature.
In this position, you will report to the Head Nurse - Veterinary Program and support the daily running of the zoo’s animal nutrition centre, veterinary clinic, and broader precinct activities when needed.
Key duties
- Work with the Nutrition Centre Specialist to organise, track, source, prepare, and place orders for animal nutrition supplies.
- Support the Head Nurse - Veterinary Program in delivering high standards of animal care, including hospital husbandry and biosecurity for animal imports and exports.
- Carry out operating procedures such as diet preparation and minimum husbandry standards, along with related work instructions, to the required standard.
- Maintain accurate and prompt written records.
- Identify problems or concerns early and escalate them to the Head Nurse - Veterinary Program without delay.
- Follow health and safety policies and procedures to help maintain a safe environment for staff and visitors.
Skills and experience needed
The ideal person will bring practical animal care knowledge, be comfortable working to set routines, and communicate well with a range of people.
- A full New Zealand driver licence
- Good physical fitness
- Experience in animal husbandry
- Understanding of zoo operations, animal management principles, and captive animal care practices
- Strong time management and the ability to stay on schedule consistently
- Basic computer skills
- Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills for working with varied internal and external stakeholders
- Self-awareness and a willingness to grow personally and support the development of others

The pay rate is approximately NZD 28.95 per hour, depending on your skills and experience.
