Job description
Job purpose
The cashier role is focused on handling customer and intermediary payments with accuracy, using the company’s core system. The position also covers issuing receipts, closing and balancing daily sales figures, and making sure cash and cheque deposits are banked each day.
Key responsibilities
- Enter and process payments from customers and intermediaries in the company system, covering cash, debit card, credit card, and cheque transactions.
- Log company income in the operating system and produce the related receipts without errors.
- Keep tight control over cash collected and protect company funds from shortages, losses, or balancing issues.
- Prepare bank deposit paperwork for review and approval, then arrange daily banking of cash and cheques.
- Track all bank credits to ensure every deposit is matched with the correct receipt issuance.
- Draft daily cash control statements for bank reconciliation and confirm that the figures are correct.
- Check all daily cash reports carefully and confirm their accuracy before submission.
- Manage petty cash and other floats in line with company policies, including daily float reconciliation.
- Record any returned cheques and notify the relevant staff so follow-up collection can be done.
- Alert the Senior Accountant whenever cash collected goes beyond approved limits so special collection arrangements can be made.
- Oversee cashier supplies such as stamps, receipt paper, and lodgement books.
- Stay alert for counterfeit bank notes and suspicious cheques.
- Handle personal filing duties and keep records properly organized in the correct locations.
- Prepare a weekly cash position and forecast to share with the CFO every Monday before noon.
- Carry out other related duties as assigned from time to time.
Performance measures
- Accuracy of the cash book.
- Speed and consistency in banking cash and cheques.
- Prompt issuance of receipts.
Working relationships
Internal: Reports to the Senior Accountant and collaborates with all business units, departments, and branches.
External: Works with Britam customers and other players in the insurance sector.
Knowledge, experience, and qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree in accounting or a closely related discipline.
- At least 2 to 3 years of experience in a similar position.
- Working knowledge of Britam products and services.
- Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication ability.
- Good understanding of cashier management processes and methods.
Technical and functional competencies
- Cash handling and reconciliation.
- Basic accounting and record keeping.
- Understanding of smart policy.
- Familiarity with payment methods including cash, cards, mobile money, and online banking.
