Job description
Role overview
An opportunity has opened for a Caretaker to join the team at Camberwell Park Specialist School in Manchester. This is a permanent Grade 3 post, based on-site, with a 35-hour working week throughout the year. The salary for the full-time role is £25,583 to £25,989. The role follows shift patterns and may require some evening or weekend work.
What the role involves
You will help keep the school safe, secure, clean, and well maintained. The post is important to the daily functioning of the site and includes responsibility for routine maintenance, health and safety checks, emergency response, and support for school activities and events. The role also includes key-holder duties.
Main duties
- Carry out general maintenance and minor repairs both indoors and outdoors.
- Complete daily safety checks, including fire safety monitoring.
- Protect the site by managing security duties, holding keys, and overseeing CCTV where used.
- Work with contractors and check that they follow site rules and procedures.
- Support and oversee cleaning staff and external cleaning providers.
- Maintain the grounds, including litter picking and gritting in bad weather.
- Prepare rooms and spaces for events such as exams and parents’ evenings.
- Track supplies, maintain stock, and place orders when required.
- Help with lettings and events that take place outside normal school hours.
- Act as a first aider if needed; training can be provided.
Experience and requirements
The school is looking for someone dependable, practical, and self-motivated, with the ability to manage a broad range of site duties. Previous experience in a caretaking or similar role involving maintenance, cleaning, and repair work is needed. Knowledge of health and safety and hygiene rules is important, and familiarity with COSHH is desirable. You should have good communication skills, be able to work alone or with others, and handle physical tasks and manual handling safely. Strong ICT, literacy, and numeracy skills are required for record keeping. A full driving licence is highly desirable.
Safeguarding and recruitment checks
All staff are expected to support the Trust’s safeguarding responsibilities and promote the welfare of children and young people. Safeguarding duties are set out in the job description. The recruitment process includes online searches for shortlisted candidates, a self-disclosure declaration, Enhanced Disclosure checks, reference checks, and other pre-employment screening. Applicants must have the right to work in the UK, and visa sponsorship is not available. If you have lived or worked outside the UK within the last five years, extra information will be needed. It is an offence to apply if you are barred from regulated activity involving children. The post is exempt under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974.
How to apply
Applications must be submitted through the online form only. CVs will not be accepted, and incomplete applications may be rejected. Early applications are encouraged, and the vacancy may close before the advertised deadline. The closing time is 12:00 noon on 6 July, with interviews planned soon after.
