Job description

About Us

Cassels Brock & Blackwell LLP is a prominent national law firm dedicated to supporting the transactional, advocacy, and advisory needs of Canada's most dynamic business sectors. With a substantial business law practice, we serve multinational, national, and mid-market clients from our offices in Toronto, Vancouver, and Calgary.

Our Culture

At Cassels, we are committed to attracting, retaining, and promoting individuals of exceptional ability and talent from diverse backgrounds. We provide significant career development opportunities, invest in professional growth, and cultivate an inclusive environment. Our firm's success is rooted in the unique skills, perspectives, experiences, and values of each team member. We champion a corporate culture that honors and celebrates the dignity, worth, and diversity of everyone.

Role Overview

Our Toronto office is seeking a Business Intelligence & Pricing Analyst to join the Accounting Department, reporting to the Senior Manager, System Reporting and Pricing. This pivotal role empowers firm leadership and business development professionals to make informed decisions regarding firm investments, market strategies, and the pricing and delivery of legal services. The analyst will operate at the nexus of business development and accounting, collaborating with professionals from both teams to deliver insightful analysis. While part of the Accounting function, the primary stakeholders for this role are the Business Development & Marketing team.

Business Intelligence Reporting

  • Develop, maintain, and enhance dashboards, reports, and self-service analytics tools, primarily for business development colleagues, offering actionable insights into firm performance. This includes analysis of revenue and growth trends, margin analysis (incorporating leverage, realization, and productivity metrics for client relationships), identification of 'white space' opportunities with existing clients, performance metrics for practices, industry groups, clients, and matters, and individual lawyer performance indicators (with appropriate context and governance).
  • Translate complex financial and operational data into clear, intuitive visuals and narratives for firm leadership, business development professionals, and practice leaders.
  • Support strategic decision-making concerning practice and industry group investments, resource allocation and staffing models, go-to-market and client targeting strategies, and content and thought leadership prioritization.
  • Foster collaborations across Accounting, Business Development & Marketing, IT, and other internal departments to improve data quality, consistency, automation, and system accessibility.

Pricing & Alternative Fee Arrangements

  • Collaborate closely with the Pricing Committee, Proposals & Pursuits professionals, and lawyers to support pricing analysis for proposals, pitches, and client engagements.
  • Develop and maintain pricing and margin models to assess alternative fee arrangements (e.g., fixed fees, phased fees, blended rates, retainers), staffing scenarios and leverage assumptions, and risk and margin sensitivity.
  • Contribute to the creation, evaluation, and ongoing refinement of pricing tools, templates, and methodologies that facilitate efficient and consistent pricing decisions.
  • Track, analyze, and help archive alternative pricing arrangements, comparing projected versus actual performance to inform future pricing strategies.
  • Serve as a resource for lawyers seeking guidance on testing alternative pricing approaches, assisting them in understanding the trade-offs between pricing, staffing, scope, and margin.

Strategic Insight & Continuous Improvement

  • Conduct ad hoc analyses to support firm-wide initiatives, executive requests, and emerging strategic questions.
  • Identify opportunities to enhance pricing governance, analytical rigor, and repeatability across proposals and client engagements.
  • Contribute to the advancement of the firm’s broader business intelligence and pricing capabilities, with potential for increased leadership or specialization over time.
