Job description

About the Role

Old Mutual is focused on unlocking Africa’s potential and values the strength that comes from a diverse workforce. This position is responsible for defining and recording business needs, working alongside business stakeholders and the design and implementation teams to shape and deliver solutions within agreed constraints. The role also includes leading testing activities and delivering outcomes independently through personal accountability.

Core Responsibilities

  • Lead and take part in discovery and inception workshops to build a common understanding of user needs and the technology solution required to meet them.
  • Map user journeys to show how people move through the system and interact with it.
  • Prepare in advance by clarifying selected requirements ahead of the next iteration.
  • Draft well-structured user stories.
  • Work with product, UX, technology, support, testing, and other specialists to collect and assess functional needs and story requirements.
  • Refine user stories through interviews, workshops, and procedures, ensuring they connect into a coherent end-to-end flow.
  • Participate in iteration ceremonies such as backlog grooming, planning, daily stand-ups, reviews, and retrospectives.
  • Secure sign-off during iteration review sessions.
  • Maintain stories in the Defined tool, making sure requirements are captured as stories and linked to the correct epics.
  • Give the Product Owner the information needed for prioritisation and estimation.
  • Support stakeholder demonstrations and story showcases.
  • Partner closely with UX to make sure processes, wireframes, and content are intuitive for end users.
  • Assess current, past, and future business conditions; analyse processes to identify issues, risks, and improvement opportunities; review processes and perform audits when needed; contribute to the design of new business processes; work with managers and users on feasibility studies and business/system requirements; and provide guidance on business procedures and policies.
  • Ensure backlog items are broken down, described, and prioritised before the next sprint.
  • Clarify the purpose and business value of minimum marketable features and minimum viable products.
  • Review user stories with the Product Owner from a strategic perspective.
  • Keep business rules and data rules current and accurate.
  • Work closely with the Business Analyst, Systems Analyst, and Project Manager to design and implement the best possible automated solution within tool constraints.
  • Help implement new or improved processes.
  • Own system, user acceptance testing, and the rollout of changes or new applications.
  • Investigate and define requirements for business processes.
  • Contribute to requirements documentation, including data models, interface layouts, data flows, screen layouts, and report layouts.
  • Test systems, support UAT, and implement changes or new applications.
  • Ensure all testing procedures and protocols are followed.
  • Work with users to define acceptance criteria and test cases.
  • Translate acceptance criteria into acceptance tests.
  • Continuously compare deliverables against story acceptance criteria and share feedback.
  • Validate that the product supports the intended business goals and provide feedback.
  • Contribute to system testing by helping define the testing approach, writing test cases, and creating test scenarios.
  • Work with the team to deliver backlog items successfully.
  • Take on multiple roles when needed, including designer, tester, facilitator, and product owner support.
  • Build a shared understanding of what the product should deliver.
  • Collaborate with the wider team to ensure stories are completed effectively and quality standards are met.
  • Partner with developers, testers, and UX professionals so they understand the business context.
  • Assist with end-user sessions, including training.

Requirements

  • Practical experience in business analysis, data analysis, solution design, testing, and data modelling.
