Job description
Position Overview
As a Building Services Worker for Kern County, you will support cleaning and maintenance activities across different county departments in the Greater Bakersfield area.
About Kern County
Kern County focuses on serving the community through work that has purpose. The organization emphasizes improvement, innovation, and employee growth, and it offers access to training and ongoing professional development so staff can continue building their careers.
Examination Details
The selection process includes a written test scheduled for July 22, 2026. The exam carries a 100% weight and is designed to evaluate practical job-related knowledge and abilities, including basic arithmetic such as ratios and proportions, use of common hand tools and electric floor equipment in janitorial work, comprehension of written and spoken instructions, safe body mechanics, basic safety practices, and the ability to read labels on containers and supplies.
If there are too few applicants to justify a written test, the Human Resources Division may instead review application materials and assign that appraisal a 100% weight. Candidates must score at least 70% in each stage of the examination process.
Minimum Qualifications
Some roles in this classification require a valid California Class C driver’s license. Applicants should have a combination of training and experience that provides the knowledge and abilities needed for the position, including simple arithmetic, the use of standard janitorial hand tools and electric floor equipment, following instructions, applying safe work practices, understanding product labels, and communicating effectively with staff, coworkers, and supervisors about finished and pending work.
Additional Information
Admission to the exam requires a government-issued photo ID. If an applicant cannot present acceptable identification, arrangements must be made with the Human Resources Division before the test date.
A background investigation may be completed for this job class. After an offer is made, candidates may also need to complete post-offer medical and drug screening at the County’s expense.
The examination process will create an eligibility list used for immediate appointments, and additional permanent or temporary vacancies may be filled as needed. Successful candidates will remain on the eligible list for twelve months unless the Civil Service Commission states otherwise.
The County is compliant with the ADA and is an equal opportunity employer that welcomes qualified applicants from all backgrounds.
