Job description

About Pickle

Pickle works with founders, operators, and business owners whose finance operations need to stay in step with rapid growth. The company provides fractional professionals who help maintain accurate bookkeeping, dependable reporting, and strong control over the numbers, acting as a trusted extension of the client team across a variety of sectors.

This is not a conventional permanent position. Professionals at Pickle operate on a fractional basis, often across several client assignments, while managing their own time and building enduring relationships through consistency, skill, and professionalism. If you value variety, independence, and close collaboration with growing businesses, this could be a strong fit.

About The Opportunity

The client is a fast-scaling, AI-led business operating at pace. They are seeking an experienced UK bookkeeper to own the day-to-day finance function, keep records accurate and organised, and ensure the bookkeeping process remains dependable as the business expands.

This is a dedicated contractor engagement that requires full-time availability and a practical, hands-on approach. The person in this role will play an important part in the company’s operational foundation, supporting financial accuracy in a fast-changing environment.

The role suits someone who is comfortable taking responsibility, enjoys working in high-growth settings, and can manage a busy workload with little oversight.

The Role

You will oversee accurate bookkeeping, handle reconciliations, support month-end activities, and help ensure compliance with UK accounting and reporting requirements. Because priorities can shift quickly, you’ll need to stay flexible, detail-oriented, and consistent in delivering high-quality work under pressure.

Key Responsibilities

  • Keep bookkeeping records accurate across multiple accounts and entities
  • Complete reconciliations on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis
  • Handle accounts payable and process expenses
  • Support accounts receivable tasks and track incoming payments
  • Prepare monthly management accounts and related schedules
  • Complete and file VAT returns
  • Work in line with HMRC rules and UK accounting standards
  • Support compliance with Making Tax Digital (MTD)
  • Look into and resolve discrepancies, variances, and finance queries
  • Maintain records and documentation that are ready for audit review
  • Assist with month-end and year-end closing tasks
  • Work with external accountants and other finance contacts when needed
  • Suggest ways to streamline finance processes and improve efficiency

Requirements

Experience

  • At least 5 years of bookkeeping experience with UK-based businesses
  • Solid knowledge of UK bookkeeping and accounting principles
  • Hands-on experience managing VAT returns and VAT compliance
  • Familiarity with HMRC requirements and regulations
  • Good understanding of Making Tax Digital (MTD)
  • Proven ability to prepare management accounts
  • Background supporting high-growth or rapidly expanding businesses
  • Comfort working in changing environments where priorities can move quickly

Systems and Technical Skills

  • Strong grasp of double-entry bookkeeping
  • Advanced reconciliation capability
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Strong Excel and spreadsheet proficiency
  • Ability to diagnose issues, investigate discrepancies, and apply solutions
  • Experience with modern finance technology stacks

Software Experience

  • NetSuite is highly desirable
  • Xero is beneficial
  • QuickBooks Online is beneficial
  • Dext is beneficial
  • ApprovalMax is beneficial
  • Other cloud accounting and finance platforms are also useful

Personal Attributes

  • Well organised and able to work independently
  • Comfortable taking responsibility and owning outcomes
  • Able to function effectively with minimal supervision
  • Commercially aware with strong problem-solving ability
  • Skilled at prioritising in a fast-paced setting
  • Composed under pressure and able to handle overlapping deadlines
  • Strong written and spoken English communication skills
  • Dependable, responsive, and accountable

Availability and Engagement Terms

  • This is a contractor engagement, not a standard employment role
  • You must be available during UK business hours
  • The role requires 160 hours per month, Monday to Friday
  • Full-time dedication is required for the duration of the engagement
  • Immediate availability is preferred
  • Applicants with long notice periods are unlikely to be suitable because the need is immediate

Why This Role?

This is a chance to work with a business at the leading edge of AI-driven growth. You’ll have real ownership, exposure to a high-performing team, and the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to the finance operations of a rapidly scaling company.

The position is ideal for someone who enjoys being the person who keeps the back office running smoothly while the business focuses on growth.

Not the main ingredient. But the one that brings balance.
