Job description
About OXMAN
OXMAN is a Manhattan-based research and design practice rooted in nature. The company builds ventures and technologies that rethink how people relate to the natural world, drawing on architecture, ecology, materials science, and computation to create solutions for pressing environmental problems.
Role Summary
OXMAN is looking for an Associate Synthetic Biologist to join a highly collaborative team of makers and thinkers. In this hands-on position, you will work directly at the bench under the guidance of the Synthetic Biologist, helping run experiments, culture and transform microbes, and bring biological concepts into real-world prototypes and demonstrations.
The ideal candidate is careful, dependable, and excited to learn. You should be comfortable working through ambiguity, committed to reproducible lab work, and interested in work that connects biology, computing, and fabrication. This role sits at the intersection of engineering, science, and design, and contributes to the development of synthetic biology-driven products and proof-of-concept systems.
You will help execute and support experiments across biological and bio-inspired systems, ranging from single-celled organisms to hybrid biological and non-biological systems.
Responsibilities
- Carry out core wet-lab experiments under the direction of the Synthetic Microbiologist, including transformation, cloning, and assay-based work.
- Assist with building and evaluating new synthetic biology tools, protocols, and methods by generating reliable experimental data.
- Prepare media, stocks, and samples; set up molecular biology workflows; and analyze and summarize findings.
- Keep scientific records accurate, detailed, and well organized.
- Work closely with biologists, engineers, and designers on both research and design projects.
Required Experience
Applicants should have a master’s degree in synthetic biology, microbiology, molecular biology, bioengineering, or a closely related discipline. A bachelor’s degree plus comparable years of practical bench experience may also be considered.
Hands-on lab experience is required, along with solid familiarity with standard molecular biology workflows. Experience using experiment-planning software such as SnapGene or Geneious is also expected, as is practical use of R and/or Python in a laboratory setting.
Preferred Background
Experience working with a range of organisms and systems, such as bacteria, yeast, algae, or plants, will be advantageous. Familiarity with custom or DIY scientific equipment is also a plus. Prior exposure to GLP or GMP environments is not required, but it is welcome.
Essential Qualities
You should be highly organized, detail-oriented, intrinsically curious about natural and engineered systems, and able to work independently with limited supervision. Strong communication skills and comfort collaborating across biology, design, and engineering teams are important. The role also requires strong ethics, scientific integrity, and respect for company and community standards.
Compensation
The salary range for this position is $102,000 to $127,000 per year.
