About the Role
Norfolk County is seeking an Archives Student to support the day-to-day work of the County Archives in Simcoe, Ontario. In this student position, you will help maintain access to historical records by assisting visitors and researchers, handling records retrieval, and supporting digitization efforts. The role contributes to preserving local heritage and making archival information easier for the public and County staff to access.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the Archivist with routine archive operations, including front-line customer service, reference help, and retrieving records.
- Help digitize archival materials, including photographs and other historical items.
- Assist with research requests from County employees and members of the public, under the Archivist’s guidance.
- Perform clerical tasks such as tracking daily statistics, indexing records, and processing archival materials.
- Contribute to the planning and preparation of an archival exhibition.
- Carry out other related duties as needed.
Requirements
- You must be a college or university student enrolled in history, library science, or another related field, with relevant work experience.
- You need to be enrolled in a post-secondary institution at the time of application.
- You should have strong people skills and be comfortable helping members of the public with research questions.
- You should have solid computer and general office skills, including working knowledge of MS Office.
- Experience with scanning equipment and Past Perfect is considered an advantage.
- Familiarity with archive or museum practices is expected.
- Strong time management, communication, and problem-solving skills are required.
- Research ability is an asset.
- First Aid certification is an added advantage.
- You must be able to attend all training sessions, submit any required documents or certifications, meet minimum age requirements, and complete the full employment term.
- Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act is required.
Employment Details
This is a student position based in Simcoe, Ontario, at the Norfolk County Archives. The role is non-union and is scheduled from approximately August 31, 2026, to December 31, 2026. The workweek is 35 hours, and the hourly wage is $18.48.
