Job description
Role overview
This role is based at NPS 1 HADDON, Milton Keynes, MK8 9AL, within an Approved Premises setting. The post is not suitable for hybrid working. While the advert references one full-time Residential Worker, it also explains an annualised-hours part-time arrangement for this vacancy.
About Approved Premises
Approved Premises are used mainly for people released on licence who need a high level of supervision and support while they reintegrate into the community.
Working pattern
This opportunity is offered on an annualised-hours basis, with flexible part-time working across either 625 or 1250 hours each year. That is roughly equivalent to one or two 12-hour shifts per week. Shifts include both standard and unsocial hours across a 24-hour cycle, seven days a week. Candidates must be able to cover a broad range of day and night availability. Final availability will be discussed at provisional offer stage.
What the role involves
As a Residential Worker, you will help manage offenders as they move from custody back into the community, supporting successful resettlement. You will contribute to residents’ welfare and supervision, help them comply with licence conditions, and work to maintain the safety of residents, colleagues and the public. The role includes carrying out checks and inspections, observing behaviour, and building constructive engagement with residents while working alongside colleagues and partner agencies.
You will normally be attached to one main Approved Premises site, but you may be expected to work at additional locations if operational needs require it.
Pay for unsocial hours
Regular unsocial hours attract premium pay on top of the advertised annual salary:
- Monday to Friday, 7:00pm to 8:00am: 30% premium
- Weekend, from 8:00am Saturday to 8:00am Monday: 50% premium
- Public and bank holidays, 8:00am to 8:00am: 50% premium, plus time off in lieu for the actual hours worked
What the service is looking for
You do not need a degree for this post. The role is better suited to people with strong personal qualities such as empathy, patience and resilience. Experience of working with people facing social or personal difficulties is desirable. Good numeracy and literacy are also important because the job involves report writing.
About the Probation Service
The Probation Service works with people before release from prison, after release, and those serving community sentences. Its purpose is to support rehabilitation while protecting the public. The organisation brings together people from many different backgrounds and offers a collaborative environment focused on shared knowledge and expertise.
Recruitment, security and eligibility
You must already have the right to work in the UK and in the Civil Service. This post is not eligible for a new Skilled Worker visa. If you have continuously held a Skilled Worker visa, this should be raised during pre-employment checks so your position can be assessed under the immigration rules and transitional arrangements in force at that time. If appointed, you must keep the legal right to live and work in the UK and Civil Service.
Successful candidates will need to pass a criminal record check. Anyone working with government assets must also complete Baseline Personnel Security Standard checks.
Nationality rules apply. This vacancy is broadly open to UK nationals, Irish nationals, Commonwealth nationals with the right to work in the UK, certain EEA nationals and their family members with settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, eligible applicants who made a valid EUSS application, some individuals with limited or indefinite leave to remain who were eligible to apply for EUSS on or before 31 December 2020, and Turkish nationals and certain family members who have acquired the right to work in the Civil Service.
Selection process
The recruitment process uses Success Profiles and will assess behaviours, strengths and experience. Feedback will only be provided if you attend interview or assessment.
