Job description

Role Overview

The Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry is hiring a full-time Ag in the Classroom Coordinator for its Market Development Division in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. This is a regular state government role that focuses on strengthening agricultural literacy through education, outreach, and program coordination.

The position supports the Ag in the Classroom initiative by partnering with teachers, students, and education stakeholders to show how agriculture connects to daily life. The role also includes creating fresh programming and resources that expand awareness of agriculture across the state.

Pay can reach $34.05 per hour, depending on education and relevant experience. The State of Oklahoma also provides a comprehensive benefits package, including a benefit allowance that helps offset insurance premium costs for employees and eligible dependents.

What the Job Involves

  • Create educational tools for teachers that turn agricultural facts into practical classroom learning materials.
  • Lead professional development sessions using Ag in the Classroom resources.
  • Organize student-focused events that teach agriculture literacy to both small and large groups.
  • Arrange and run trips, tours, workshops, and conferences for teachers, industry professionals, and non-traditional educators.
  • Identify grant opportunities and submit applications to strengthen the program.
  • Coordinate events ranging from 30 to 300 participants.
  • Work with the program team each year to build the budget and strategic plan.

Senior-Level Scope

This specialist-level role is responsible for advanced work in planning, organizing, and carrying out complex marketing programs. It may involve leading projects, creating work plans and budgets, and directing or supporting other coordinators who help implement assigned programs.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

The role calls for strong understanding of Oklahoma agriculture, advertising and promotional practices, public relations, business administration, marketing strategy, and program evaluation.

Successful candidates should be able to build and maintain effective working relationships, follow direction, make sound independent decisions, communicate clearly, manage multiple projects at once, assess options and choose appropriate actions, review ongoing programs for compliance and effectiveness, and develop comprehensive marketing plans.

Education and Experience

A bachelor’s degree in agriculture plus two years of qualifying experience, or a closely related field, is required. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted, with one year of experience in marketing agricultural commodities or value-added processed products substituting for one year of the required education.

The applicant should also hold a current Oklahoma teaching certificate, have at least one year of classroom experience, and possess strong knowledge of Oklahoma academic standards.

Work Conditions

This is a field-based position that requires frequent in-state travel. Duties may include event setup, occasional heavy lifting, and some outdoor work. Evenings, weekends, and extended work hours are common.

Additional Requirements

The ideal candidate will understand common teaching methods and be able to explain curriculum and strategy to educators. They should be comfortable developing professional relationships with agricultural producers, agency staff, and organizational leaders, and should be willing to work independently or as part of a team on several initiatives at once. Strong written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking, are essential, along with working knowledge of standard office tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Google applications.

Employment Terms

This position carries a twelve-month probationary period. Some roles in this job family are designated as safety sensitive under Oklahoma law.

Equal Opportunity and Assistance

The State of Oklahoma is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate on the basis of genetic information, race, religion, color, sex, age, national origin, or disability. Reasonable accommodation may be provided to individuals with disabilities upon request.

Current active State of Oklahoma employees must apply for open positions internally through the Workday Jobs Hub. Additional assistance or job-related questions should be directed to the relevant agency contact.
