Job description
Overview
The Henrico Education Foundation runs after-school enrichment programs for elementary school children enrolled at selected Henrico County schools. The program is designed to support children in the environment where they already attend school, with activities that strengthen their physical, social, emotional, and intellectual development.
This role is for an energetic counselor who can guide a group of children through structured and engaging activities while building supportive, positive relationships. Part-time openings are available at Colonial Trail, Nuckols Farm, Shady Grove, and Short Pump Elementary Schools in the West End/Short Pump area.
Responsibilities
- Deliver lesson plans in a way that matches the developmental stage and individual needs of the children.
- Keep assigned students actively involved and participating in activities.
- Build appropriate, supportive relationships with children to better understand their needs.
- Maintain a safe environment for the children in your group.
- Help with homework and encourage academic growth.
- Provide focused, attentive supervision at all times.
- Act as a positive example and use professional behavior and youth-development practices.
- Create a welcoming setting that encourages exploration and positive play.
- Work collaboratively with the team and maintain open, ongoing communication with the supervisor.
- Attend staff meetings and daily huddles.
- Complete all required training.
- Follow all applicable government, local, Henrico Education Foundation, and 21st Century grant rules, policies, standards, and guidelines for summer and after-school programming.
- Follow the expectations set out in the TIMELESS Program Staff Training Manual, including Teamwork, Impression, Mission, Engagement, Leadership, Education, Safety, and Students.
Requirements
- You must meet the Program Leader standards under Virginia regulations for licensed child day centers.
- A degree in a child-related field is required.
- An early childhood certificate is accepted.
- At least 6 months of program experience working with children is required.
- Prior experience leading activities in areas such as songs/music, arts and crafts, science, math, literacy, drama, or physical education is preferred.
- Experience with child behavior management is needed.
- Strong leadership abilities are required.
- Good communication skills are required.
- You should be dependable and able to work well as part of a team.
Benefits
- Pay starts at $17.00 per hour after training is completed.
- The position is part time, with about 20 to 25 hours each week.
- Work is scheduled Monday through Friday, with no weekends.
