Job description

Overview

Wellington Water is hiring an Advisor Strategic Planning to help shape long-range decisions for essential infrastructure. Based in Petone, this full-time role supports planning that improves outcomes for communities today and well into the future.

What you will do

  • Assist with the development and upkeep of strategic plans spanning 10 to 30+ years.
  • Use data, trends, and risk analysis to guide investment and planning choices.
  • Help coordinate strategic infrastructure initiatives from a planning perspective.
  • Ensure infrastructure planning is aligned with growth strategies and land-use direction.
  • Prepare clear and useful reports that support organisational decision-making.
  • Support long-term planning for critical infrastructure that delivers value to the community.

What we are looking for

  • A proactive mindset and the ability to stay focused on long-term outcomes even when priorities change or progress is delayed.
  • Comfort with structured, future-focused thinking and the ability to link short-term actions to long-term benefits.
  • Strong interest in systems thinking, strategic planning, and achieving lasting social and environmental outcomes.
  • Confidence in working collaboratively, communicating complex ideas simply, and building strong working relationships.
  • A background in planning, economics, or engineering, such as town planning, economics, or water engineering.

Working arrangements and pay

This is a permanent full-time role with 40 hours per week. The salary range is NZD 86,230 to NZD 121,736 per year, including KiwiSaver, with an expected appointment around the midpoint depending on skills and experience.

About Wellington Water

Wellington Water provides professional water services across Greater Wellington and South Wairarapa. The organisation manages drinking water, wastewater, and stormwater infrastructure for the region and is owned by multiple councils. Its work is centred on the value of water and a strong commitment to community, environment, and service.

From 1 July 2026, Tiaki Wai will assume responsibility for Three Waters Services for about 433,000 residents across the Wellington metro region. Tiaki Wai will own the assets it operates, and Wellington Water employees will move into this new council-owned organisation.
