Role overview
This is a senior communications leadership role based in the United States, posted for a partner organization that handles the hiring process and all follow-up steps. The position sits at the crossroads of science, storytelling, and global influence, with responsibility for explaining breakthrough innovation in a way that resonates broadly.
As the head of communications, you will guide a highly visible function that shapes earned media, executive messaging, and donor-oriented storytelling for international audiences. The work supports major initiatives focused on solving some of humanity’s toughest challenges through incentive-led innovation.
You will collaborate closely with senior leaders to present a clear, unified external voice across media, fundraising, and organizational narrative. The role combines long-term strategy with direct execution and requires someone who can help build communications systems and processes from the beginning.
This is an opportunity to influence conversations at a global level while turning complex scientific and technological advances into timely, understandable, and compelling messaging.
Responsibilities
- Set the global earned media direction and develop strong relationships with reporters, editors, and outlets across science, technology, business, and philanthropy.
- Maintain a steady and coherent public narrative that keeps the organization visible between major launches and announcements.
- Lead communications across the full journey of key initiatives, including launches, public updates, and storytelling around impact.
- Convert technical, scientific, and policy-heavy ideas into clear messaging for both specialist and general audiences, including donors and partners.
- Work with advancement and fundraising teams to create donor communications, campaign stories, and impact-focused materials.
- Advise on executive communications such as speeches, thought leadership pieces, and media appearances.
- Plan for crisis communications and protect reputation in coordination with senior leadership and legal partners.
- Develop and expand the communications function, including agency oversight, internal workflows, and operating frameworks.
- Align owned content with earned media efforts to increase reach, relevance, and engagement.
Requirements
- At least 12 years of senior-level communications experience, with direct responsibility for earned media, executive messaging, and narrative strategy.
- Strong ability to turn complex scientific, technical, or policy subjects into persuasive stories for multiple audiences.
- A well-developed network of contacts at leading media outlets covering science, technology, business, or philanthropy.
- Experience establishing communications teams, systems, or agency relationships from scratch.
- Demonstrated success in creating donor-facing or philanthropic communications for senior stakeholders or investors.
- Excellent writing, storytelling, and executive communication abilities, with experience supporting top leadership.
- Experience in journalism, science communication, technology, climate, or innovation-centered organizations is highly desirable.
- Comfort operating in fast-moving, mission-driven settings that require both strategic thinking and hands-on delivery.
- Exposure to nonprofit, philanthropic, or incentive-based innovation models is an added advantage.
Perks and benefits
- Base pay in the range of $190,000 to $210,000, plus the possibility of annual performance-based incentives.
- Remote-first arrangement within the United States.
- Health insurance coverage for employees and dependents, including medical, dental, and vision.
- 401(k) retirement plan with employer matching contributions.
- Plentiful paid time off, covering vacation, sick time, holidays, and floating days.
- Paid parental leave for employees welcoming a new child.
- Wellness, internet, mobile phone, and learning-and-development stipends.
- Dedicated focus time, including meeting-free blocks and deep-work weeks.
- Quarterly in-person all-hands gatherings for collaboration and alignment.
