Role overview

Based in Papakura, this fixed-term full-time position is for a qualified and registered housing social worker who will provide a compassionate, professional service to individuals and families seeking long-term, stable accommodation. The role supports The Salvation Army’s wider mission and contributes to helping people move toward lasting independence.

You will work with people who may be facing hardship, trauma, mental unwellness, or urgent housing needs, using social work practice, reporting standards, and a person-centred approach. The position requires you to recognise each person’s dignity, listen carefully to their story, and help them identify practical solutions that support their goals and future stability.

Key duties

Handle a caseload and coordinate referrals to both internal and external support services according to client goals.
Work toward positive client outcomes and make sure agreed outcomes are tracked and achieved.
Maintain accurate and timely records of client contact, case notes, and reporting.
Link clients with Salvation Army services such as Community Ministries and Corps where these services can improve their situation.
Use social work frameworks and professional practice to deliver effective support.
Support individuals and families to build sustainable independence and long-term housing solutions.
Work within a team environment that is focused on supporting whānau and responding to homelessness.

What you will bring

At least 2 years of relevant social work experience.
A recognised qualification in social work, or an equivalent credential.
Current full registration with the Social Work Registration Board.
A clean full driver’s licence.
Legal entitlement to work in New Zealand.
Strong skills in building and maintaining relationships.
Sound cultural awareness and understanding of The Treaty of Waitangi.
Prior or current experience in transitional housing, which would be an advantage.
The ability to engage respectfully with people from varied backgrounds and those experiencing adversity, trauma, or poor mental health.
A commitment to supporting people in taking responsibility and working toward their own goals.
A professional approach that respects each client’s dignity and individuality.
Comfort using digital tools such as Teams, Outlook, and Office 365.
Sensitivity, patience, and empathy when working with people.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
A genuine commitment to social justice.
Ability to work to deadlines and targets while juggling competing priorities.
Proactive problem-solving skills and the ability to manage multiple demands.
Strong cultural competence and the ability to work from a bicultural perspective.

Working arrangement

This is a fixed-term full-time role of 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday, from 9:00am to 5:30pm. Some after-hours on-call work is also required.

Pay and conditions

The starting salary is expected to be between $68,037 and $102,000 per year. Final pay will depend on the selected candidate’s years of experience, and the role sits under a pay equity arrangement.
