Role overview

What the job involves
The role covers a mix of desk-based and hands-on duties. Typical work includes security checks and searches at the gate, handling incoming deliveries, overseeing visitor movement, and keeping an eye on phone use and CCTV. You may also need to lift and carry items, and walk across the prison grounds while escorting vehicles.
Who this role suits
No formal qualifications are needed. The role is well suited to someone who communicates clearly, stays composed under pressure, and can use good judgement and common sense. Being a dependable team player is especially important in this fast-moving environment.
Working pattern
You’ll be expected to work a range of shifts, including nights and weekends, as part of keeping the prison operating continuously.

This role offers a strong introduction to prison operations and can lead to wider opportunities within the prison service. It may also open the door to applying for the OSG to Prison Officer conversion route.
Training and progression
Successful candidates receive training and are supported with development and progression opportunities.
Pay and benefits
The salary for this role is £30,491. Alongside base pay, the package includes 25 days of annual leave at the start, rising to 30 days after 10 years of service on a pro-rata basis, plus 9 days of bank, public and privilege holidays. Additional support includes access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service, a Civil Service pension, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme.
