About the role
The American Cancer Society is seeking a licensed oncology nurse to join as an Associate Medical Editor. This position focuses on creating and refining cancer education content that is accurate, evidence-based, easy to understand, and useful for a wide range of readers. The work spans the full cancer journey, including prevention, risk reduction, screening, diagnosis, treatment, survivorship, and end-of-life care.
The role is important to maintaining the organization’s credibility, supporting compliance, and reducing risk through timely and medically sound content. It also involves serving as a clinical resource for the organization on oncology-related questions and content needs.
This is a fully remote position and may be based anywhere in the United States.
Key responsibilities
- Research, draft, revise, and update cancer information so it stays current, clinically accurate, easy to follow, and aligned with organizational and medical guidance.
- Improve readability and accessibility of patient education materials by applying health literacy, adult learning, and health equity principles.
- Use reporting and project data to manage print patient education work, coordinating with inventory teams and external vendors as needed.
- Protect editorial quality by maintaining consistency with accessibility standards, internal messaging, policies, and content processes.
- Support escalated cancer-related questions from constituent service teams and the cancer helpline when needed.
- Act as a clinical advisor for mission-driven initiatives, partnerships, special projects, and content review requests.
Experience and qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in nursing is required.
- A master’s degree in nursing is preferred.
- An active, unrestricted RN license is required.
- Oncology certification such as OCN or AOCN is preferred, or the candidate should be eligible to sit for the exam.
- At least 5 years of clinical oncology nursing experience is required.
Skills and knowledge
The ideal candidate should have a strong grasp of oncology care across the continuum, including risk, prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment, survivorship, and end-of-life topics. Experience with cancer treatment administration, patient education, side-effect management, and current therapies is important. The role also calls for solid research skills, the ability to translate complex clinical information into plain language, familiarity with AMA style and referencing, and awareness of how AI and SEO can affect content work. Strong organization, teamwork, time management, and attention to detail are also essential.
Travel and working conditions
- Periodic travel may be required for team meetings, conferences, or training sessions that support organizational goals.

Compensation and benefits
The starting salary range is $85,000 to $90,000. Final compensation will depend on relevant experience, skills, specialty, education, and geographic location, in a way that complies with non-discriminatory hiring practices.
