BoatTrips.ie creates close-to-the-water river journeys on the Nore, using a traditional Irish open boat. Guests experience a slower pace while learning about the river communities and the people who once maintained boat traffic through Kilkenny city.
Role Summary
This on-site Tour Guide position in Kilkenny involves leading visitors on river trips and delivering lively, informative commentary about local history, life on the river, and the city’s built heritage. You will welcome guests, set expectations before departure, and help ensure every trip feels safe, comfortable, and memorable.
Key Duties
In this role, you will guide groups along the river Nore, answer visitor questions, manage group flow, and create an engaging experience that also draws attention to wildlife and the surrounding natural environment. You will assist with ticketing and sales, encourage interest in other services and tours, and work with teammates to keep schedules running smoothly and service standards high.
Qualifications
- You need one of the following boating credentials: ISA Powerboat Cert, Inland Motorboat Cert, or Inland Skippers Licence.
- You must hold an STCW Elementary First Aid Certificate or a higher-level qualification.
- You must also have an STCW Personal Survival Techniques Certificate.
- Strong tour-leading ability is important, including confident group management and engaging storytelling.
- Clear communication is essential, along with spoken English and attentive listening.
- You should bring strong customer service instincts, with a focus on hospitality, empathy, and visitor satisfaction.
- An interest in history, especially Kilkenny’s local and cultural heritage, is beneficial.
- Basic selling skills are useful for promoting trips and handling booking-related questions.
- Previous work in outdoor tourism or nature-based visitor experiences is an advantage.
- You must be comfortable working safely around water and have basic water-safety awareness.
- Good timekeeping, a professional attitude, and availability for weekends and public holidays are expected.
