Role overview

An opportunity has opened for a Band 6 Specialist Biomedical Scientist to join the Clinical Biochemistry team at Charing Cross Hospital Automation Laboratory, part of Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.

The post calls for a motivated and appropriately qualified Biomedical Scientist with substantial experience after registration, together with an IBMS Specialist Portfolio in Clinical Biochemistry or equivalent specialist expertise and experience.

If a suitable Band 6 appointment is not made, the role may initially be placed under Annex U, with movement to Band 6 once the required IBMS Specialist Portfolio has been completed successfully.

Because biochemistry and serology testing are carried out on the same platforms, you will also be expected to rotate into the Serology area after the necessary training and competency sign-off.

The laboratory operates around the clock, seven days a week, so the post holder must be willing to work late shifts and weekends, supporting the ongoing quality and continuity of patient care across the Trust. You may also be required to work across any of the six hospital sites when service needs demand it.

Applicants must hold HCPC registration and have considerable post-registration experience in an ISO 15189-accredited laboratory.

The Trust and NWLP emphasize staff development, offering opportunities for professional growth and progression.

Key responsibilities

  • Work closely with colleagues to improve service delivery, maintain departmental standards, and support performance oversight.
  • Take part in local and divisional laboratory meetings and contribute to efficient, high-quality service operation.
  • Maintain awareness of departmental updates and communicate complex or technical information clearly to team members.
  • Share and receive detailed information with internal colleagues and external contacts, providing guidance and explanations when required.
  • Report incidents promptly in line with NWLP health and safety procedures.
  • Develop competence in allocated diagnostic areas to ensure a high standard of laboratory support for patients and staff.
  • Work independently where appropriate, making sound decisions while seeking input from senior or medical staff when needed.

Requirements

  • HCPC state registration is mandatory.
  • Significant experience after registration in an ISO 15189-accredited laboratory is essential.
  • Applicants should hold an IBMS Specialist Portfolio in Clinical Biochemistry, or be able to demonstrate equivalent specialist knowledge and experience.
  • Ability to work across a 24/7 service, including late and weekend shifts, is required.
  • Willingness to rotate into the Serology section after training and competency assessment is needed.
  • Flexibility to work across six hospital sites when necessary is expected.

Benefits

  • Career development and progression opportunities.
  • Flexible working options.
  • Staff wellbeing initiatives and programmes.
  • Employee awards and recognition scheme.
  • Cycle to Work scheme.
  • Car lease scheme.
  • Season ticket loan.
  • Membership options for onsite leisure facilities.
