Role overview
Laois County Council is seeking a Senior Executive Planner to join and strengthen its Planning Department in County Laois, Ireland. This senior appointment supports the Council’s growing planning workload and its wider ambitions around housing delivery, economic growth, infrastructure provision, and the development of sustainable, resilient communities.
The role sits within the Planning Department and reports to the Senior Planner, or to another person designated by the Chief Executive. It involves overseeing parts of the department’s work and contributing to a wide range of services delivered by the Council.
The position offers the chance to contribute to strategic planning across Development Management, Forward Planning, Project Delivery, and Planning Enforcement. The department also plays a role in cross-functional work connected to Climate Action, Active Travel, and Sustainable Transport.

What the role involves
The Senior Executive Planner will work closely with senior management and elected members to help deliver Council services, implement local policy decisions, and support corporate objectives in line with the elected Council’s overall direction at County Council and Municipal District level.
Candidate profile
The Council is looking for someone with substantial planning management experience, a strong record of delivery, and the ability to lead teams, work with stakeholders, and help shape both operational and strategic planning work. The post also requires strong reporting, ICT, interpersonal, and communication skills, along with a sound understanding of health and safety obligations and local authority structures in Ireland.
