Overview
National Railroad Safety Services, Inc. (NRSS) is looking to add a Railroad Flagger to the team. In this field-based role, you will help protect crews working around active tracks by managing train movements and ensuring compliance with applicable railroad, state, and federal safety standards. The position supports Class 1 railroads, regional short lines, transit systems, state rail projects, and contractor operations.
Location
Montgomery, Alabama.
Reporting Line
This role reports to the District Manager.
Travel Requirement
Travel is a major part of the job, with an expected travel level of roughly 50% to 85% on average. The role may also involve extended assignments away from home, potentially for months at a time.
Compensation
Pay ranges from $25 to $37 per hour, depending on experience.
Experience Needed
Candidates should bring at least 2 years of experience working with a Class 1 railroad, regional short line, transit system, State DOT rail division, railroad supplier, railroad contractor, or railroad consultant. Experience in the Maintenance of Way (MOW) department is preferred.
Key Duties
- Organize and support day-to-day activity at the job site.
- Keep dispatchers, train crews, railroad personnel, and contractors informed and aligned.
- Lead safety meetings before work begins.
- Apply and enforce railroad, state, and federal operating rules.
- Confirm that contractors have completed the required training.
- Identify and correct rule violations when they occur.
- Prepare daily logs and reports covering work performed.
- Maintain on-track safety in accordance with federal requirements.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Comfort using basic office and communication tools such as Citrix, email, phone systems, and text messaging apps.
- Ability to work with Android tablets and smartphones.
- Strong organizational habits and close attention to detail.
- Clear verbal and written communication skills.
- Working knowledge of railroad engineering, design, construction, and safety practices.
- Ability to develop and maintain strong client relationships.
- Willingness to travel extensively for long periods.
- Ability to complete required federal, client, and company training.
Work Conditions
This is a field role. You must be comfortable speaking, reading, and writing in English, traveling or driving long distances, standing for extended periods, and walking on uneven terrain. The position also requires good near, far, color, and peripheral vision, and the ability to work in hot and cold weather, dusty conditions, and noisy environments. Lifting up to 50 pounds is also required.
Education
A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
