Overview

A Probation Officer acts as an officer of the court at all times and may be assigned to different functions depending on departmental needs, such as casework, presentence investigation/PDR writing, intake, or court team duties.

Key Responsibilities

  • Apply and administer the Indiana Risk Assessment System as part of daily case management.
  • Keep regular communication with clients, attorneys, treatment providers, placement agencies, and other relevant parties.
  • Examine records and documents related to a client’s legal and social background.
  • Prepare court forms, reports, and other correspondence as needed.
  • Appear in court and provide recommendations when required.
  • Interview clients and explain the legal obligations tied to supervision.
  • Carry out field visits in line with the Indiana Office of Court Services contact standards.
  • Coordinate with counselors, treatment programs, public service agencies, placement agencies, and similar partners as necessary.
  • Follow all Marion Superior Court policies and procedures.
  • Take on additional duties and special assignments as directed by the Chief Probation Officer, while supporting the department’s team-oriented approach.

Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree is mandatory. Prior probation-related internship experience is advantageous.

The selected candidate must pass the Indiana Probation Officers’ Certification Examination within six months of starting the role. Depending on the assignment, additional certifications or training may also be required.

Language and Compensation Note

Spanish, ASL, Burmese, or other language skills are considered a plus and may come with salary enhancement.
