Role overview
The Mutuel Clerk position focuses on handling pari-mutuel ticket sales and redemptions, verifying wagers, assisting guests with betting-related questions, and explaining wagering methods in a professional and courteous way.
Key duties
- Follow the organization’s core values along with all policies and procedures.
- Represent the company positively both inside and outside the gaming and racing venue.
- Interact with customers and coworkers in a respectful, upbeat manner.
- Arrive on time and ready to perform the responsibilities of the role.
- Work with pari-mutuel wagering knowledge, including ticket reading, tote keyboard use, and common racing terms.
- Stay informed about racing formats, wagering options, simulcasting availability, and offerings at different tracks.
- Process bets efficiently and accurately, provide betting instructions, issue cash payouts, refund or cancel tickets, and share other relevant information.
- Provide scratches and race results for tracks as needed.
- Handle cash banks carefully, verify transactions through the sales system, balance accounts, and complete closing paperwork.
- Complete and sign a variance form whenever a cash bank does not balance, including possible reasons for any discrepancy.
- Use strong cash-handling, counting, and math skills to support accurate work.
- Report complaints or suspicious activity to management promptly.
- Protect the confidentiality of winning tickets and guest information.
- Observe all departmental procedures, safety requirements, health rules, and Kentucky Horse Racing Commission regulations.
- Build guest loyalty through friendly, personalized service and professional communication.
- Work cooperatively with the team, support coworkers, and maintain a constructive, open attitude.
- Know the property’s services, locations, amenities, and surroundings in order to answer guest questions and give directions.
- Maintain a professional relationship with coworkers, guests, vendors, and the general public.
- Handle pressure well and be available for irregular schedules, including weekends and holidays.
- Take on additional tasks as assigned.
Education and experience
- A high school diploma or GED is preferred.
- Prior cashiering or related work experience is preferred.
- Candidates must be at least 18 years old.
- Basic arithmetic skills are required, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Licensing
- The role requires the ability to obtain and keep a valid Kentucky Horse Racing Commission license.
Work setup and conditions
- The job uses a tote wagering system and/or betting terminal.
- Experience with counting equipment such as a 10-key calculator is needed.
- The position involves speaking, turning, twisting, standing for long periods, and repeated hand use for most of the shift.
- It also includes some bending and stooping, plus occasional lifting, carrying, and sliding or transferring items weighing 1–20 lbs.
- Mental demands include organizing information, reading, and performing math throughout the workday.
- Work takes place both indoors and outdoors, with exposure to cigarette smoke, occasional hot or cold temperatures, loud noise, and confined spaces.
Other requirements
- A valid driver’s license must be provided and kept current.
