About the Role
The Department of Public Works is hiring a Maintenance Planner in Halifax to support the upkeep of provincial buildings and infrastructure. This role focuses on building a structured preventive and predictive maintenance program for equipment and assets across government-owned properties, helping reduce unplanned outages and improve overall maintenance performance.
About the Organization
The Building Services Group within Public Works is responsible for maintaining Nova Scotia’s network of roughly 2,000 buildings and infrastructure assets. Its work covers a broad range of sites, including museums, core office buildings, correctional facilities, justice centres, and other government properties. Reliable maintenance support is essential to prevent service interruptions across government operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the creation and rollout of a 12-week maintenance plan for operations and maintenance teams.
- Use a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) to organize work schedules and allocate resources.
- Coordinate preventive maintenance and reactive maintenance activities.
- Review CMMS backlog data, analyze issues, and suggest solutions to the Maintenance Planning Specialist.
- Track and report trends in the condition of mechanical, electrical, and architectural building components.
- Work with other Public Works teams to align and exchange equipment life-cycle information, condition data, and maintenance records.
Qualifications and Experience
Applicants should have completed high school and bring at least 4 years of directly related experience in facilities maintenance management. An equivalent blend of education, training, and experience may also be accepted.
Preferred Knowledge and Assets
- Working knowledge of building construction and maintenance, including architectural, electrical, and mechanical systems and components.
- Experience using computers, web-based databases, planning tools, and related applications.
- Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
- Assets include familiarity with government procurement rules and tendering processes.
- Additional advantages include basic knowledge of budgeting and project management.
- Experience with SAP, database administration, Primavera, or Microsoft Project would also be beneficial.

Equivalency
Equivalent combinations of education, training, and experience will be considered. One example of an acceptable equivalency is a related diploma plus 2 years of relevant facility management experience. Candidates using equivalencies must clearly show this in their application.
Working Conditions
- The standard schedule is 35 hours per week, or 7 hours per day.
- Overtime may occasionally be required.
- The role is generally based in a comfortable office setting.
- Most work is done in a seated position, with regular opportunities to move around.
