About the company
Legalist is a technology-driven alternative asset manager that sources investments using proprietary, data-led methods to focus on legal and government payment assets that are not closely tied to broader markets. The company was launched from Y Combinator in 2016 and now oversees more than $1.7 billion in assets for endowments, foundations, and family offices.
Role overview
Legalist is hiring a Litigation Paralegal to support its Litigation Finance Portfolio Monitoring team. In this position, you will combine paralegal knowledge with strong analytical thinking to review legal matters, assess portfolio positions, and help track investments tied to litigation. The role is centered on the point where legal work meets investing, and it requires close coordination with attorneys, investment professionals, and other internal teams.
Key responsibilities
- Examine legal records, case filings, and related supporting materials to help with underwriting and ongoing portfolio oversight.
- Carry out legal, factual, and background research, including finding comparable cases and monitoring relevant updates.
- Assist with due diligence by assessing counterparties, claims, and the risks attached to each matter.
- Maintain organized case files, investment records, indexes, and internal documentation.
- Follow important case milestones, deadlines, and overall portfolio performance across active matters.
- Prepare concise summaries, memoranda, and internal reporting on both legal and investment findings.
- Work across legal, underwriting, operations, and technology groups to keep workflows aligned.
- Help improve internal processes, information organization, and workflow management across the portfolio.
- Support special initiatives connected to legal analysis, compliance, and investment operations.
Qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree in Political Science, History, Economics, Law, Business, or a similar discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
- At least 3–5+ years of relevant experience, including paralegal work at an AmLaw 200 or similar firm, or experience in legal research, compliance, investigations, or litigation support.
- Working knowledge of legal research platforms such as LexisNexis and Westlaw.
- Strong ability to analyze, research, and write, with the skill to distill complex legal and financial information.
- Experience handling legal documents and coordinating case-related workflows.
- Excellent attention to detail, along with strong organizational and document management habits.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills for explaining complex topics.
- Comfort operating in a dynamic, fast-moving environment where priorities can change quickly.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with people from different functional backgrounds.
Preferred background
- Exposure to financial analysis, underwriting, or other investment-related work.
- Familiarity with litigation finance, credit investing, or legal risk evaluation.
- Experience drafting memoranda or case summaries used to support decision-making.
