About Shockbyte
Shockbyte is a major game server hosting business serving players and studios around the world. With support for 60+ games and close to one million customers globally, the company has grown into one of the largest providers in its space. Established in 2013 and based in Victoria, Australia, it operates internationally through entities in Australia, the UK, and the Netherlands.
The business runs with a lean team structure and a culture that values accountability, speed, and ownership. Management layers are kept deliberately thin, and people are expected to lead their area with minimal bureaucracy.
About the Role
Shockbyte is looking for an HR Manager to fully own the people function and work directly with the CEO and executive team. This is a broad HR generalist position with strategic influence, covering operations, hiring, compensation, performance, and employee relations across Australia, the UK, the Netherlands, and distributed teams engaged through EoR arrangements worldwide.
The role suits someone who is comfortable operating independently, making decisions, and building practical systems that improve how the business runs. You will be trusted to research issues, choose the right approach, and deliver measurable outcomes without heavy supervision.
Key Responsibilities
- Take end-to-end responsibility for the HR function, including operations, hiring, compensation and benefits, performance and development, and employee relations.
- Improve recruitment processes to shorten hiring timelines and raise candidate quality.
- Update and maintain HR policies so they remain compliant, relevant, and usable across all jurisdictions.
- Investigate and apply employment law requirements for Australia, the UK, the Netherlands, and any other regions where staff are engaged through EoR or future expansion.
- Work closely with the CEO and executive leadership to ensure people strategy supports business goals.
- Build and sustain a high-performance culture through clear performance management and development frameworks.
- Oversee compensation and benefits structures so they remain competitive, fair, and aligned to capability and results.
- Address employee relations matters with professionalism, judgment, and fairness, using evidence-based decisions.
- Lead HR initiatives that produce measurable business value and set aside activities that do not.
- Maintain HR systems, documentation, and operational processes so the function stays organised and reliable.
Requirements
- A bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business, or another related discipline with a strong HR emphasis.
- Hands-on experience as an HR generalist across operations, recruitment, employee relations, compensation and benefits, and performance management.
- The ability to work autonomously, take ownership, and carry work through to completion with minimal oversight.
- Experience dealing with employment law across multiple regions, or strong capability to research and apply compliance requirements in different jurisdictions.
- A commercial approach to HR, with decisions guided by business impact, ROI, and evidence.
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, including confidence working with senior executives.
- Ability to manage competing demands in a lean, fast-paced environment.
- Melbourne-based and able to work from the office on a hybrid schedule.
Preferred Skills and Experience
Professional HR certification such as AHRI, CIPD, SHRM, or an equivalent qualification is preferred. Experience with Employer of Record arrangements, familiarity with employment legislation in Australia, the UK, and/or the Netherlands, and experience in high-performance or fast-growing technology businesses would also be advantageous.
Benefits
- Hybrid working arrangement with flexibility between home and the office.
- Flexible hours that allow you to align work with your most productive time of day.
- Clear career progression opportunities and long-term growth pathways.
- Access to a professional development budget for learning, certifications, and industry events.
- Support for home office or coworking setup costs.
- Virtual team activities such as trivia, escape rooms, and game nights.
- Company merchandise including hoodies, mugs, and stickers.
- Opportunities to travel for global industry events.
- Free game server hosting for personal use.
- Complimentary tickets to esports tournaments and gaming expos.
Work Environment
This role sits in a small, high-accountability team where initiative, independent judgment, and practical execution are valued. It is best suited to someone who is comfortable owning an entire function and driving improvements that directly support the business.
