Role overview
The housekeeper is responsible for keeping assigned spaces clean, orderly, and presentable. The role also requires promptly escalating issues to a supervisor, including items that may not be explicitly listed in the duties. Collaboration with teammates is expected, and the scope of duties may be updated by management whenever business needs change.
Key duties
- Maintain cleanliness in hallways, laundry rooms, restrooms, corridors, elevators, stairwells, party rooms, fitness centers, and other shared areas so that health and sanitation expectations are met.
- Vacuum or shampoo rugs, carpets, upholstered furniture, and draperies as needed.
- Collect refuse, empty waste containers and ashtrays, and move trash to designated disposal locations.
- Transport toilet supplies and cleaning materials with wheeled carts.
- Sweep, scrub, wax, and polish floors using manual tools or powered equipment.
- Dust and shine furniture and equipment.
- Keep storage rooms and service carts organized, stocked, and sanitary.
- Wash and maintain windows, walls, ceilings, doors, and woodwork, including waxing and polishing where required.
- Report maintenance concerns such as burnt-out lights, leaks, and damaged equipment to Building Maintenance.
- Disinfect tools and supplies using approved germicides or steam sterilization equipment.
- Follow all applicable state, federal, and company safety rules to help maintain a safe workplace.
- Protect residents, guests, and property by following precautions and reporting damage, theft, and found items to supervisors.
- Set up rooms for meetings and arrange furniture and decorations for social or business events.
- Use new equipment correctly and follow all safety steps before operating it.
- Respond to emergency maintenance requests when needed.
Work environment
This position is based in a residential setting and focuses mainly on shared and waiting areas. The job includes working around chemical cleaning products and may involve exposure to outdoor weather conditions.
Physical requirements
- Ability to stand for long periods, walk, climb stairs and ladders, crawl in tight spaces, stoop, kneel, lift, move, or carry up to 20 pounds.
- Ability to push cleaning equipment weighing up to 30 pounds.
- Ability to handle, finger, grasp, and feel objects and equipment.
- Ability to reach with arms and hands.
- Ability to repeat motions with the wrists, hands, and fingers.
Schedule and employment terms
This is a non-exempt hourly position. Work hours are set by each property to match community needs, and schedules may change based on operational requirements.
Experience and qualifications
- At least 1 year of experience managing and supervising a housekeeping department.
- Good knowledge of cleaning and sanitation products and their correct use.
- Ability to operate standard cleaning equipment used in a residential building, such as vacuum cleaners, floor polishers, and cleaning carts.
- Ability to respond quickly and effectively to emergency situations.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
