This opportunity is for an energetic and committed porter to join the Portering Services team at Glan Clwyd Hospital, with work also across community locations.

The role centres on moving patients and transporting items safely and promptly, helping to keep hospital services running smoothly and efficiently. The work includes lifting, transferring, pushing, and pulling heavy loads, and mechanical aids may be used when a risk assessment shows they are needed. Examples include sack and pallet trucks, powered and manual tugs/mechanical movers, and stairwell climbers.

This is a demanding physical role, but it is also highly rewarding. A strong customer-care attitude, enthusiasm, and a willingness to make a positive difference are important.

Main duties

Portering Services supports all parts of the hospital, so the post holder must be ready to respond to changing demands throughout the day. The workload can vary and may be affected by factors such as weather, patient numbers, patient flow, and other outside influences.

You will work as part of a team to help the service operate efficiently. Typical duties include responding to requests for patient transfer, assisting in emergencies, and collecting and delivering samples, medicines, meal trolleys, linen, goods, and mail in a timely way.

Although many tasks are routine, the day-to-day flow of work can be unpredictable. For that reason, a flexible attitude and the ability to use your own initiative are essential.

Person specification

Experience: Previous experience in a similar role is required.

Communication and judgement: You should be able to communicate clearly, remain calm in difficult situations, and handle conversations sensitively.

Values and behaviour: You must be comfortable working with people who may be upset or anxious.

Other requirements: The role requires the ability to lift, push, and pull heavy weights for long periods, cope with distressing situations including death, travel within the local geographic area, and work flexibly across all shifts, including weekends, nights, and Bank Holidays.
