Descrizione del lavoro
Role overview
Westpac is looking for an experienced data science specialist to help shape a new approach to economic insight. This position sits at the crossroads of artificial intelligence, data engineering, and macroeconomics, with the goal of turning data into production-ready research products that support Westpac’s market perspective and institutional client offerings.
The role is part of the DataX and Economics teams within WIB DDAI (Data, Digital & AI). Together, these groups build data-led products and insights for external institutional clients, while Economics develops macroeconomic research and forecasts that inform the bank’s market voice.
This is a hands-on building role for someone who can move beyond prototypes and deliver scalable, real-world solutions in complex enterprise environments. Sydney-based hybrid working is offered.
What you will do
- Create and launch econometric and machine learning models for forecasting, nowcasting, and scenario planning.
- Design AI-powered tools such as NLP and automation solutions to modernise research workflows and improve insight generation.
- Convert economic ideas and hypotheses into rigorous quantitative models and frameworks.
- Work directly with macroeconomic, transactional, and alternative data sources to uncover insights at scale.
- Own the full model lifecycle, including experimentation, production rollout, validation, and governance.
- Communicate findings effectively to both technical teams and senior business stakeholders.
What we are looking for
- A tertiary qualification in Computer Science.
- Demonstrated success delivering production-grade data science or machine learning solutions, not only proof-of-concepts or academic projects.
- Strong capability in statistical modelling and time-series analysis.
- Advanced Python skills, with experience using scikit-learn, statsmodels, and PyTorch or TensorFlow.
- Proven ability to build scalable models and data-driven products.
- Comfort working in large, complex enterprise settings with strong stakeholder management skills.
- Exposure to economics, econometrics, or financial markets.
- Experience building NLP or LLM-based solutions, along with cloud ML platforms such as Azure ML, SageMaker, or similar tools.
- Experience working alongside researchers, strategists, or subject-matter experts.
- A curious, commercially minded, and delivery-focused approach, with the ability to turn ambiguity into structured solutions.
- Strong problem-solving skills, a bias toward shipping real outcomes, and the ability to explain complex ideas clearly and persuasively.
Benefits and culture
- Access to special banking offers, product discounts, and employee-only mortgage rates.
- Flexible working options designed to support better work-life balance.
- Multiple leave choices, including Culture, Lifestyle, and Wellbeing leave.
- Learning and development support to help grow your career within the bank.
- Opportunities to contribute to the community through volunteering initiatives.
Inclusion and support
Westpac is committed to building an inclusive workplace and welcomes applicants from all backgrounds, ages, genders, and ability levels. Additional support is available for veterans, Indigenous Australians, and neurodiverse candidates. Candidates who need adjustments during recruitment can access further assistance through the bank’s accessibility support resources.
Application note
This opportunity is based in Sydney with hybrid working arrangements. The role is permanent and full time.
