Role overview

What you will do

You will be responsible for operating crossing barriers so trains can pass through on schedule while allowing other users to cross only when conditions are safe. You will also monitor, maintain and respond to crossing equipment issues, taking prompt action when faults or safety concerns arise.

Because every crossing is different, you may need to manage varied activity, user behaviour and equipment, including challenging unsafe actions or handling difficult situations. The role is safety-critical and requires constant awareness and sound judgement.

Skills and experience

This position is well suited to people who can stay focused, communicate clearly and work safely without close supervision. Experience in work that demands concentration, responsibility and interaction with others will be useful, even if you do not come from a rail background. Many people in this type of role have progressed into higher-grade signalling positions.

Working pattern and conditions

You must be able to commute to the location within 60 minutes and have access to your own transport, as the job involves different shift patterns. The working week includes days, nights and weekends.

This is a safety-critical role and employment offers depend on successful drug and alcohol testing, relevant medical assessment, BPSS pre-employment checks, and hearing and eyesight testing. All offers remain conditional on completing the required pre-employment checks.
