Role summary

Gunvor Group is a major independent global commodities trading company, known for building logistics solutions that move physical energy efficiently and safely from supply points to end demand locations.

Clearlake Shipping, along with Clearlake Chartering USA, is part of the Gunvor Group and ranks among the world’s largest tanker vessel charterers. With chartering and freight trading operations across Singapore, Geneva, and Houston, the business supports the Group’s and the market’s chartering requirements through an experienced freight trading and operations team. Claims and operations work are run out of Singapore and Tallinn.

Founded in 2003, Clearlake Shipping operates a premium tanker, LPG, and LNG fleet on both spot and time-charter arrangements. Its activities span vessel chartering, freight hedging (FFA), operations, claims management, and terminal safety advisory work. The wider shipping arm also includes ownership interests in selected chartered vessels and involvement in joint ventures for newly built refined products tankers.

Position overview

Reporting to the Global Head of Demurrage & Claims, this permanent full-time role focuses on the precise calculation, negotiation, and recovery of demurrage and voyage-related claims. The objective is to support Shipping in controlling voyage exposure and improving cash recovery outcomes.

The role calls for solid technical knowledge of charter party claims, sound commercial judgement, disciplined record-keeping, and effective coordination with both internal teams and external counterparties. It also requires comfort working with systems and data to improve efficiency, reporting, and control.

Key responsibilities

  • Work out, check, and pursue recovery of demurrage and voyage-related claims by confirming contractual rights, issuing well-supported claims, and negotiating and escalating where needed to maximise collection, while using commercial judgement to identify and challenge the underlying cause of exposure.
  • Work closely with Shipping Operators, Masters, Agents, and counterparties to secure missing documents, confirm facts, and clear up inconsistencies.
  • Log claims correctly in the appropriate systems and maintain full compliance with document control and electronic filing standards.
  • Prepare clear weekly and monthly reporting on demurrage and claims, covering ageing, dispute status, and recovery progress.
  • Flag recurring dispute patterns, weak contractual positions, and unfavourable clauses for Freight Traders and other relevant stakeholders.
  • Assemble and structure supporting correspondence and claim files for review by Legal Counsel or the P&I Club when escalation is required.
  • Help ensure claims activity is aligned with operational exposure and internal reporting/provisioning needs.
  • Support ongoing improvements in claims procedures, reporting quality, and data discipline.
  • Where appropriate, use digital tools, automation opportunities, and data-driven workflows to cut manual work and strengthen control.
  • Develop productive relationships with internal and external stakeholders to help resolve and collect claims promptly.
  • Take on other duties as assigned by the manager or delegate.

Candidate profile

The ideal applicant brings at least 5 years of relevant experience in tanker shipping, demurrage, claims, or oil and gas trading, along with a strong grasp of charter parties, commercial contracts, laytime and demurrage principles, and petroleum industry terminology.

You should also have a strong understanding of time-related and post-deal claims, plus practical knowledge of shipping operations and/or maritime law. The role suits someone who can manage claims commercially, negotiate effectively, follow up consistently, and work accurately with complex information.

Strong analytical ability, careful attention to detail, and clear written and verbal communication are essential. The successful candidate will be organised, proactive, solution-focused, able to work under pressure, and comfortable balancing competing priorities. A disciplined, accountable, and positive working style is important.

Preferred strengths

  • Strong systems experience in claims, reporting, or ETRM environments, with excellent data discipline.
  • Advanced Excel skills; exposure to Power BI, Power Query, or automation tools is an advantage.
  • Practical use of AI or other digital tools to improve efficiency or control.
  • Track record of improving processes.
  • Structured, data-led, and improvement-oriented approach.
