Role overview
The Ministry of Education in New Zealand is hiring a permanent, full-time Special Education Advisor for its Christchurch office. This position sits within the Learning Support team and focuses on helping children and young people with additional learning needs access inclusive, equitable, and effective education.
What the role involves
- Strengthening inclusive practice across schools and other learning environments.
- Offering professional advice and practical guidance to schools, teachers, and families, while building the capability of those supporting learners.
- Carrying out specialist assessment and analysis to inform evidence-based interventions planned with others.
- Working alongside a trans-disciplinary team when a child’s needs are complex.
- Contributing to individual casework, targeted group work, and wider systems-level support.
- Using collaborative and creative thinking to help achieve better outcomes for students.
About the team
Learning Support is part of Te Mahau | Education Services Group. The team works with families, whānau, caregivers, schools, early childhood educators, and partner agencies across English and Māori medium settings to improve learning outcomes and support social inclusion for learners with additional needs.
Candidate profile
To be considered, you should have relevant teaching experience and the ability to work effectively with children, families, teachers, and colleagues from different cultural backgrounds. A strong understanding of Te Ao Māori, or the willingness to build that knowledge, is important, along with the ability to uphold public service integrity and conduct.
Salary and conditions
The pay range for this permanent role is NZD 69,966 to NZD 106,016 per year, plus 3% KiwiSaver. The appointment level will reflect the selected candidate’s skills and experience.
