Role Overview
This opening is for an experienced Senior Software Engineer to contribute to Flywire’s billing and payments platform, which supports money movement at very large scale every day. The position is full-stack and calls for strong technical depth, independent problem-solving, and the ability to work closely with teams across different regions. The role sits within a small Australia-based team focused on building new capabilities and strengthening core product functionality. The ideal hire brings a practical engineering mindset, attention to quality, and a strong focus on secure, scalable solutions.
What You Will Do
- Design, develop, and maintain robust, testable, and easy-to-support features for the billing and payments platform.
- Make sound technical and architectural choices independently, using product objectives as the guiding principle.
- Use AI tools to inspect codebases, understand architecture, and speed up analysis of system dependencies.
- Protect product quality by keeping security, reliability, performance, and scalability at the forefront.
- Apply diagnostic tooling to investigate and resolve issues efficiently and calmly.
- Work with engineering and product stakeholders across teams, including participation in client discussions for requirement gathering and troubleshooting.
- Contribute to collaborative design sessions by evaluating trade-offs and helping shape practical solutions.
Technical Requirements
- Strong hands-on experience with Java development in professional environments.
- Solid knowledge of relational databases, especially MySQL, along with object-oriented programming principles.
- Familiarity with Spring Core, Spring MVC, and Hibernate is advantageous.
- Working knowledge of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and JSP.
- Comfortable using AI-assisted development tools and creating thorough test coverage for new code.
Candidate Profile
- Self-driven and capable of taking ownership while knowing when to escalate thoughtful questions to leadership.
- Able to learn unfamiliar systems or older codebases quickly and manage time effectively.
- Comfortable turning broad product goals into concrete technical plans without constant supervision.
- Strong communicator who can collaborate with distributed teams across time zones.
- Brings 10+ years of professional application development experience.
- Has a proven background as a Java developer in production settings.
- Experience in FinTech or higher education is considered a strong plus.
- Able to deliver quality work in a fast-moving environment.
