Role Overview
National Railroad Safety Services, Inc. (NRSS) is seeking a Railroad Flagger in Augusta, GA. This full-time field position is responsible for helping protect crews working on railroad tracks by managing train movement and applying federal rail safety standards. The work supports Class 1 railroads, regional short lines, transit systems, state transportation projects, and outside contractors.
Reporting & Travel
This role reports to the District Manager. Travel is an important part of the job, with expected travel averaging between 50% and 85%. The position may also require extended periods away from home, including travel that can last for months at a time.
Compensation
Pay is listed at $25 to $37 per hour, depending on experience.
Experience Needed
The ideal candidate has at least 2 years of experience with a Class 1 railroad, regional short line, transit system, State DOT Rail Division, railroad supplier, railroad contractor, or railroad consultant, preferably in the Maintenance of Way (MOW) department.
Core Duties
In this role, you will coordinate worksite activity, communicate with dispatchers, train crews, railroad personnel, and contractors, lead pre-work safety briefings, enforce railroad, state, and federal rules, verify contractor training compliance, identify rule violations, complete daily activity reports, and maintain on-track safety in line with federal requirements.
Work Conditions
The work is performed in a field environment and requires clear communication in English, including speaking, reading, and writing. You must be comfortable traveling or driving long distances, standing for long periods, and walking on uneven surfaces. The job also calls for good near, far, color, and peripheral vision, the ability to work in hot and cold weather, and comfort in dusty and noisy settings. You should also be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
Skills & Tools
The role calls for strong organizational skills, attention to detail, clear verbal and written communication, familiarity with railroad engineering, design, construction, and safety practices, and the ability to maintain strong client relationships. You should also be comfortable using basic computer tools such as Citrix, email, phone, texting apps, Android tablets, and smartphones.
