Role Overview
NorWest Co-op Community Health is looking for a dependable and flexible Primary Care Assistant to join its Walk-In Clinic team in a permanent 0.7 EFT position. The role sits within Administration and reports to the Manager of Primary Care Operations. The anticipated start is as soon as possible.
The successful candidate will contribute to front desk operations, entrance screening, and the provision of safe, efficient, high-quality care across multiple NorWest locations. This position calls for strong customer service, teamwork, professionalism, and the ability to stay organized and composed in a busy, high-pressure setting.
The position follows a 2-week rotation that includes evening and weekend work. Under the CUPE agreement, applicable shifts qualify for evening and weekend premiums.
Schedule
Week 1: Monday to Friday, 11:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Week 2: Off for all days.
Key Duties
- Support reception and administrative functions for the Walk-In Clinic and Primary Care teams.
- Carry out entrance screening and help guide clients and visitors appropriately.
- Handle clerical and scheduling tasks that keep clinic services running smoothly.
- Maintain accurate documentation and protect the confidentiality of client records.
- Help ensure care delivery remains safe, efficient, and of high quality.
- Share workload and step in to cover colleagues when needed.
- Promote a respectful, inclusive, and cooperative workplace.
Experience and Qualifications
- At least 2 years of related healthcare experience is required.
- Experience using email and computerized calendars is required.
- Familiarity with Accuro electronic medical records is preferred.
- Experience with medical records, filing systems, statistics, and personal health information processing is expected.
- Previous switchboard or receptionist experience is required.
- Completion of high school to Manitoba standards is required.
- A Unit Clerk Course and/or Medical Office Assistant Course must be completed.
- Basic Life Support certification recognized by the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada is required, and a certificate must be provided if available.
- A mix of education and work experience may be considered.
- Keyboarding speed of 40 words per minute is required.
- Knowledge of medical terminology is required.
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook is required.
- Ability to remain professional, calm, and respectful with coworkers, clients, professionals, and community members is essential.
- Must be able to work independently with limited supervision and take initiative.
- Must adapt quickly to changing situations while staying accurate and detail-oriented.
- Excellent customer service, communication, and interpersonal abilities are needed.
- Strong written and spoken English skills are required.
- Must be able to solve problems and work effectively in a fast-paced interdisciplinary environment with interruptions and deadlines.
- Experience with specimen collection, medical supply management, and statistical data collection is an asset.
- Experience working with diverse cultures is required.
- High-level confidentiality must be maintained.
- Ability to organize a heavy workload under pressure and meet deadlines is required.
- A Criminal Record Check and Child/Elder Abuse Registry check are required.
- A valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle are required.
- Must be willing to work weekdays, weekends, evenings, and holidays.
- Physical ability to do moderate lifting and moderate walking is required.
- Must be able to work effectively in a fast-moving setting with frequent interruptions.
