Chief Operating Officer

Overview

This is a senior executive opportunity within a major not-for-profit organisation working at scale to help tackle food insecurity across two states in Australia. Based in Western Sydney, the business has an established operating model, an extensive supply chain network and a substantial volunteer base, and is now looking for an experienced Chief Operating Officer to guide its next phase of growth and impact.

The appointment offers hands-on leadership and meaningful community contribution. Reporting to the CEO, the COO will take ownership of the organisation’s operational agenda and have the freedom to strengthen, improve and scale core processes across the business.

The role sits within supply chain and logistics and calls for someone who has led large, complex, high-volume operations and is motivated by work with broader social purpose.

Key Accountabilities

• Direct operations across warehousing, transport, sourcing and distribution to community partners, with a focus on better efficiency, service performance and workplace safety.
• Manage the sourcing network and strengthen supply chain resilience by working closely with retail, manufacturing, grower and donor partners to increase recovery of surplus food, including chilled and perishable goods.
• Lead operational digitalisation and analytics initiatives, including warehouse management platforms, distribution tools and reporting systems.
• Build, coach and guide operational teams together with a large volunteer workforce, while promoting a strong safety culture, clear responsibilities and mission alignment.
• Oversee operational budgets and major cost levers, collaborating with Finance on forecasting, reporting and performance monitoring to support sustainable long-term outcomes.

Experience and Qualifications

The ideal candidate will bring a track record of leading complex, high-volume operations in supply chain, logistics or distribution settings. Strong commercial judgement and financial capability are essential, along with executive-level experience managing budgets and cost drivers.

Applicants should also have practical experience using data and technology to improve planning, decision-making and operational efficiency. A strong background in safety leadership, risk management and governance across a multi-function environment is important, as is genuine affinity with the not-for-profit or social impact sector.
