Overview

Oranga Tamariki is inviting expressions of interest for a fixed-term Allied Support Worker position in Nelson. This full-time, site-based role sits with the Youth Justice team and runs for up to 12 months, with the possibility of extension. The salary range starts at $68,371 and goes up to $75,501, depending on experience.

This opportunity is suited to people who want to build their career while contributing to the wellbeing of tamariki and rangatahi. You may be studying toward a relevant qualification or already have experience supporting people in the community. The position is non-regulated, is not a social work training role, and does not involve direct social work duties or a caseload.

What the role involves

You will support social workers with home visits, administration, and transport tasks, working under the direction and supervision of social workers and team leaders. The work is varied and depends on the daily needs of the team.

  • Provide site-based support as needed in line with day-to-day team priorities.
  • Help social workers record case notes and other details in CYRAS and related systems.
  • Transport children and young people safely between locations such as appointments, schools, and sports activities under supervision.
  • Assist with arranging and preparing Family Group Conferences when admin staff or coordinators are unavailable.
  • Support tamariki and rangatahi when they are out of school or waiting for placements.
  • Handle administrative tasks for placement or programme transitions under social worker oversight.
  • Help children and young people settle into schools or return after time away.
  • Carry out supervised visits and contacts, including driving clients and overseeing interactions, with some weekend and after-hours work required.
  • Build cooperative working relationships with colleagues, partners, and stakeholders.

What you need to bring

We are looking for people with a mix of the following qualifications, experience, and strengths.

  • Interest in studying toward, or already undertaking, a relevant tertiary qualification.
  • A full, current, clean driver’s licence and a willingness to drive ministry vehicles; historic convictions may be considered individually.
  • Experience supporting people in the community who need assistance.
  • Confidence working in emotionally challenging situations with empathy and understanding.
  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to work well with peers and other stakeholders in a collaborative environment.
  • Intermediate skills with Microsoft Office tools.
  • Composure in complex emotional situations and the ability to stay professional under pressure.
  • Careful handling of sensitive and confidential information.

What’s on offer

The role offers a competitive remuneration package, starting at $68,371 and reaching $75,501 based on experience. You will also have access to strong training and professional development opportunities to support your growth.

Oranga Tamariki values diversity and is committed to an inclusive and respectful workplace. This role gives you the chance to use your skills and experience to support the wellbeing of tamariki and rangatahi.
